I decided to re-watch Jack Reacher tonight. It's actually pretty good.
Amazing cast to back Tom Cruise: Rosamund Pike, Werner Herzog, David Oyewelo, Jai Courtney, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins. There isn't a dud among them.
It's not as hilariously-abominably cheesy as The Equaliser (though nearly) nor as wonderfully low key as Cold In July, but it's a million times better than a klutzy, tonal misfire like John Wick.
Among other things, the fight choreography's attention to pain is exemplary, the elaborate exposition between Cruise and Duvall of the expected intricacies of the final confrontation prior to its enactment is elegant and satisfying, and the opening sequence, which is conducted entirely without dialogue and depicts the seemingly senseless slaughter that motivates the drama, is beautifully constructed.
