Just watched Mountains May Depart. I'm usually not a big fan of that kind of narrative structure but I thought it was a beautiful film. I didn't expect much from it which might be part of the reason it blew me away.
Jia's well on his way to establish himself as one of the most important directors out there when it comes to social commentary, which is no small feat in a country where the government-mandated pro-People's Republic and anti-japanese narratives are threatening to ruin an entire generation of filmmaking.
