The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was not very good. Lots of weird directing. Those clever flashbacks where the director says "Ha, you didn't notice this the first time" can be funny, but not ten times in one movie, and certainly not while showing scenes that were two minutes ago. Not great leads either, obviously.
Spotlight's very good. Fairly clear comparison to Zodiac, although it doesn't contain any chases or jump horror. Good parts for Ruffalo and McAdams, and it's also good to see Michael Keaton in a serious role.
Room is great. Last of the best picture nominees on my watch list and definitely one of my favourites. Really packs an emotional punch. I hope Abrahams wins best director for this. Its an amazing job he does in every area of his direction.
I watched 13 Assassins. Almost never watch Asian films, but the three I remember seeing (this, The Raid and The Raid 2) I've all enjoyed immensely. Any recommendations for other films?
As far as mainstream movies go - Infernal Affairs, Ip man, Old Boy, Memories of Murder
Election, Storm Warriors, Oldboy, Chungking Express, The Tai Chi Master, Young and Dangerous, A Simple Noodle Story, … it's kind of a crazy question, there are millions of great "Asian" films.
That's why I asked, don't have the time at the moment to watch millions of films. 🙂
Tampopo. 🙂
Id say these are some of the gateway asian movies you could watch before digging in deeper:
Memories of Murder Castaway on the Moon Infernal Affairs My Sassy Girl Oldboy I Saw The Devil Battle Royale
Totally forgot Battle Royale, I've seen that one. Thanks guys, it was kind of an eye opener to realize there might be a huge untapped source of good movies that I haven't seen.
Confessions by Tetsuma Nakashima.
But absolutely Infernal Affairs.
Is Infernal Affairs that much better than The Departed?
Yes.
I'll add that to my list then. Been meaning to watch it for years now.
Infernal affairs is a trilogy? Should one watch all three, or is there one in particular?
Watch them in chronological order. They're best that way.
Can't see how anyone who likes cinema could possibly regret watching Infernal Affairs, it's a masterpiece, a masterclass and a thriller. The leads are dynamite.
Agreed - I wish I discovered it before I watched The Departed (which was a good movie in its own right) though

Watch one and then, if you have time, watch two. No real need to watch three.
They got sequelitis, subsequent ones worse than the original. IA 2 is a watchable movie. IA 3 not great.
To be absolutely honest, while I liked it when I watched it, I didn't find Infernal Affairs memorable. That kind of movie I guess.
