Yeah, I agree, the weird "colonial" dialogue on Mars was totally characteristic of movies about Americans in Space too.

Saw The Martian this weekend...

Enjoyed the space scenes, the vastness of the universe(and space programs), terracotta Mars...
The scenes where Matt is alone, doing his thing, the "I can do this" attitude burned in his psyche along with his training, figuring out how to survive are decent enough.....The other actors are really the ones hanging out in the cold...Mildly disappointed...

I liked it but I think it'd have been better with less of the rest of the cast.

Didn't really like any of the new characters tbh either. Why did they have to explicitly tell us that Finn ran away before he did anything wrong? He would have been a far more interesting character, if he had been with the First Order for a while and then deserted. But it could also be a result of the terrible pacing. This film felt really rushed. Every problem they faced, was solved within the next 10-15 mins. There was no tension built up between the action scenes.

Yes, but Kel, you may as well compare the Star Wars ouvre or whatever to Mad Max and The Terminator and say the latter are more gritty and therefore better. Star Wars is, and will be, and should be, more fluffy and cheesy than those two, therefore the characters will, largely, follow the genre.

That's not to say that the film isn't flawed - it certainly is. But it's fun. And that's the main point.

Just back from Star Wars. Enjoyed it, was a fun movie. Haven't seen the originals for many years and of the prequels I think I only saw the first one at the time it came out and never got around the the others.

Spoilers in case anyone hasn't seen it yet:

Agree with others that the villains were a little underwhelming and that it could have been better if the Finn character had decided to redeem himself from a darker past rather than running before he did anything. Enjoyed Ford's performance and was sad to see him killed, though it did seem a bit obvious it was going to happen when he stepped onto that bridge. Although in these sort of films you never really know when there isn't a body (have been avoiding reviews or anything that could contain spoilers so I don't know if anything has been said about this). Didn't realise Skywalker was only going to be in it for 5 seconds with no lines but guess he'll be more prominent in the next one.

Watched the Hateful Eight earlier. Absolutely and totally loved it; Samuel L Jackson and Walton Goggins are superb. QT is back, y'all!

I loved it too. Has Goggins even had a main role in a movie before? He was brilliant, reminded me of him as Boyd Crowder. Jackson was excellent as well, as he usually is when actually giving a damn. Actually there wasn't a single bad performance there.

Finally watched Guardians of the Galaxy. Very enjoyable film.

I wouldn't consider myself a Marvel fan but the recent ones generally leave you pretty satisfied.

During the first half (ish) Goggins reminded me of another Justified character, Dewey Crowe. For me, it was only later on that Crowder came to the party. Either way, great to see him centre stage. He's a superb actor.

Greatly enjoyed the performances of Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh too.

Just saw The Hateful Eight. Really enjoyed it, found myself rooting for Major Warren 😆

Tarantino's best work since Pulp Fiction for me. Unlike Django Unchained, this film didn't try to be 6 different genres at once.

The Revenant blew me away, and it was wonderful for a movie to do that not based off plot/acting but the scenery and total commitment to their vision. Highly highly recommended for anyone who enjoys cinematography, beautiful landscapes, or appreciates being deep deep in the outdoors.

Was also oddly nostalgic for me, not that I was alive in the 1800's, but that I grew up around a lot of the landscapes. The Kananaskis valley in Alberta and Squamish in BC are wildly different but each contain some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

If you're thinking about seeing it I would recommend reading up on how grueling the filming was. They limited themselves to natural light, very very little CGI, and Ignitaru's classic extended takes (which are much harder when filming fight scenes).

Taratino's best film since Pulp Fiction for sure.

Quality cinema experience, I saw it in the Odeon Lecoster Square with longer scenes and it even had an intermission in the middle. Best cinema experience in a while.

PS: Samuel L kills it in this movie!
