Well, they've created a problem with their antagonists. They leapt straight into humanising Kylo Ren which means the second film will probably have to either give him a redemption arc, or deal with him becoming irrevocably evil. Then they introduced "Snoke" who's a thoroughly unconvincing, and probably fake, super-tall Voldemort-looking hologram.

Basically the film left me feeling like I didn't want to see any more of Snoke, and like there wasn't any more mystery about Kylo Ren to unravel. That's an issue. They're going to need to flip a switch or cleverly introduce a new antagonist who doesn't feel tacked on in the second one.

The movie is 'accessible' and safe. Some finer points are in the extended media.

Finn, for example, has a backstory that makes his behaviour more believable and is more remarkable than the movie makes apparent.

Not really, no. It's a mash up of various comics, books, encyclopaedias etc. that you probably wouldn't want to waste time on. This is a pretty decent write-up (though not particularly 'in-depth')...

Thought so at first looking at her pics, but checking again what Bonet looks like- similar but plenty different. Quite pretty tho Bonet was a real beaut when she was young.

Is she in Star Wars?

watched the hateful 8. its pretty much a 'tarantino gon' tarantino' affair. i enjoyed it more than django, but not as much as inglorious basterds. ive seen some criticism of it being overlong, but i didnt really feel it dragging at any point.

I watched The Force Awakens. I agree it's basically a rehash of a New Hope plus nostalgia.

Heh, that's a good way of describing it, I guess.

It'll get mixed reviews, I'm sure. Had a lot of the things Tarantino usually gets criticised for. Perhaps he even went further than he has ever before in some scenes.

The actors and dialogue was at its usual sky-high level though. Really enjoyed it. Absolutely love Walton Goggins. Can't think of better fitting actors for a Tarantino movie than Sam L. Jackson and Walton Goggins.

Watched Spotlight last night. Its both heartbreaking and blood boiling. Great film though. Acting is stellar throughout but Ruffalo stole the show for me.

Just watched it as well. I liked how they didn't try to turn the journalists into some sort of heroes, with their inner demons, having to overcome whatever personal life issues, social pressures etc. Just a bunch of dedicated people doing their job and what they believed in. Agree on the acting, everyone was great.

Just home from Spectre, and saw the Star Wars movie last night.
Spectre - good action flick. I haven't seen the last couple of Bond movies, so there were a few references I couldn't relate to. Some ridiculousness going on, of course, but all in all I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Have to say, I like Craig's James Bond. He is darker than his predecessors, and I quite like that. 7 out of 10 beers for me.

Star Wars - no spoilers but, honestly, I feel I've seen this movie before. Still, quite liked it, and Kylo Ren has potential. Intrigued enough to want to see the next movie. 6 beers out of 10.

Oh, and IMax was well over rated. Expected better to be honest.

the big short is one of my favourite movies of the year, up their with creed and straight outta compton. steve carrell in particular is great in it.

Just back from Star Wars. I thought it was brilliant. Think Segwey has it spot on in his bullet points.

Watched Sicario last night, thought it was a nice looking mess of a film with a good performance from DelToro and 2 poor performances from Brolin and Blunt. I'd heard it described as "grown up" a lot before I seen it and that is absolute horseshit if you don't exclude the last half hour of the film.

sicario was solid. you're right, blunt was a little grating in the lead role

Blunt just whinges all movie and Brolin is just smug. There isnt a single interesting character in it. There are some good, really well done tense scenes but they dont come together into a cohesive whole. The end feels like a completely different movie too. The pacing is terrible. I just do not.get the hype on this one.
