Yeah I don't mind he's a bit rubbish, he's like a Dark Side version of Luke in The Empire Strikes Back, angst and incomplete control. The bigger problem is that "Snoke" is really shaping up to be underwhelming. Which leaves them short of good antagonists for the next couple of films.

When Kylo "completes his training" there's nothing to stop them giving him an arbitrary upgrade to his powers.

Would be great if we could make this a real things and do this for this and the tv shows thread as well. That way you can find out about stuff without having the details exposed to you. I've had to kind of ban myself from entering them because of all the spoilers on showsand films that I've downloaded but haven't had the chance to watch yet.

Would be great to be able to see reviews about shows and movies and whether to bother to start or continue watching without having to worry about spoilers. The white writing is ok but I've seen in the last forums that had a quote feature but with spoiler tags that were collapsed until someone chooses to expand the section. Not sure if it's the same mod you're talking about.

Watched SW, loved it. Spoiler stuff:
- Don't see why it's a problem that Rey kicked Kylo's ass. He was injured.

- Snoke seems underwhelming, yes, but it's not like The Emperor was all that great either. I like Driver, and think that is what will matter.

I watched it last night. Thought it was really good, but I didn't really like that it was basically a copy of the first film. It's like they took every plot device used before and just changed the characters. Miles better than the Phantom Menace though (though to be honest even White Chicks is better than the Panthom Menace).

I watched The Walk today. I thought it was pretty cringeworthy. I thought Man on Wire delivered a much better story, straight from the horse's mouth. It also captured the beauty of the stunt in a way that Zemeckis simply can't, due to the nature of Hollywood moviemaking and its reliance on epic postcard pictures and special effects.

... but above all I think this is exactly the kind of story that doesn't really need a fictional account. It cheapens the whole thing. Philippe Petit is a larger-than-life character of the sort that will only be reduced when you tell an actor to capture his personality too (especially if that actor is JGL with the world's worst fake french accent). To me, this was a film about detracting from the wonder of man rather than adding to it. And that's the opposite of the cinematic ideal I subscribe to.

Truly stoked about seeing the Star Wars movie in the new IMax theater. Because everyone wants to see it there though I have to wait until midnight on the 30th...

Watched Star Wars. I'd give it a 6/10 rating. It was decent and I enjoyed the "old school" effects; made it feel like a Star Wars film, but the plot was predictable and too simple. Almost like the first half of a proper movie. Also seemed like a lot of things were forced into it, in order to tie into the original trilogy. Rey was also a shit character.

Oh I really enjoyed Rey. It does have much more of the feel of the original trilogy, which is a good thing. Very Saturday matinee action feel to things with plenty of cheesiness thrown in. The main downside is it's perhaps too close to the original Episode IV.

She's a Steven Seagal like character. Flawless and boring. She's a caricature of what a strong female lead would look like. Compare Rey to Charlize Theron in mad max, Linda Hamilton in Terminator or Sigourney Weaver in Alien, and you quickly realize that Rey is a laughable attempt at creating a "strong female character".

Spoilers:

Didn't really like any of the new characters tbh either. Why did they have to explicitly tell us that Finn ran away before he did anything wrong? He would have been a far more interesting character, if he had been with the First Order for a while and then deserted. But it could also be a result of the terrible pacing. This film felt really rushed. Every problem they faced, was solved within the next 10-15 mins. There was no tension built up between the action scenes.

Spoilers, Kel. I thought the movie was poor. As Kel mentions, the characters are very poorly developed. Mor annoying, is that the two main characters have these massive changes in their lives, and don't really act surprised or question their transitions. They just take to this new life like ducks to water. That really annoyed me throughout. And then, it lacked magical fight scenes, whether with space crafts or sabers. All the battles were quite 'meh'. And then some of the main characters had a very awkward attempt at friendship/romance. I would go around 6/10 as well. Much better than the Natalie Portman or Jah Jah Binx crap, but far from a classic

The unreal resilience of the characters to momentous changes is part of being a Star Wars story, or a story from one of the "planetary romances" that inspired it, though.

Consider The Empire Strikes Back in which Luke ends up all alone on a planet completely covered by swamp being educated by a muppet, and barely blinks. And then gets his hand chopped off in one scene only to be happily grinning at his robot hand in the next.

What do you think of the pacing? For me it was all wrong. I never felt "invested" in anything that happened, because they never let any tension build up.

On the plus side, I think both main villains have a bit of potential. Could be interesting characters.

I watched Episode IV for the first time in years a couple of days before I saw The Force Awakens, so I was ready for the unrealistic character development and really sloppy plotting. And yeah, it is really unrealistic and sloppy.

To be honest, there were some really poor moments, but I still really enjoyed it because of the neurotic fidelity to so many aspects of the original trilogy. 🙂

I think the screenplay is going to create some interesting problems for the second one but there's still a good chance to keep it non-shit.
