I've only read completely spoiler-free reviews. It's great that the trailers don't reveal anything either, I know close to nothing about this movie.

Yep. Those two look great.

Saw Star Wars last night. Star Wars played a big part in my childhood as I watched the old films innumerable times with open mouth and got sucked in like only a child can. Therefore, I tried my best to go in without massive expectations but I couldn't help myself being scared that it would be shit and disappoint me. Thankfully they've made a brilliant reboot of the series.

Here's my spoiler-free impressions:

It just feels right in every way if you are a fan of the old trilogy. For me it hits the perfect balance between being true to the old films and their magic universe and doing some new, brave things with the story and characters.
Fighting scenes are fucking awesome. Both the space battles and the blaster/lightsaber battles are edge of the seat-intense. Hearing the sound of a tie fighter again brought a tear to my eye.
The new characters Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren are all great additions to the universe. Especially Rey is fantastic.
It was very emotional seeing Han Solo, Leia and Luke again 30 years older. The writers have done a brilliant job of making their re-introduction work as a transition from the old generation to the new. And Harrison Ford fucking nails it. Probably his best performance ever for me.
It shines through how much love went into the making of this film. I was never a big fan of JJ Abrams but it takes balls to take on such a big responsibility which can almost only end up disappointing yet he outdid my expectations (and probably many others').

Liked star wars, didn't love it

A few gripes:
- not one memorable piece of new music
- not sold on the villains. New big bad looks like a budget emperor. Kylo has potential but
- they shouldn't have let rey punk him so resoundingly so early. He was a good villain until they super charged reys abilities to have her beat him
- didn't get the political landscape. So there's a new republic and a resistance? Why doesnt the republic just demolish the first order themselves?

Overall it was a promising (re)start to the franchise

Thought it was a quality flick. Pacing was slightly off because they want it to be coherent for those who haven't followed the other films but they handled it well overall.

Surprisingly good acting for a star wars film too.

Agree with the second, third and fourth of those Gaz. I think they made a couple of miscalculations that might come back around to bite them.

That said, they can probably get out of Kylo Ren being easily beaten by Rey by having Snoke "complete his training" as hinted. Snoke himself seems nailed on to be some sort of Wizard of Oz figure—three feet tall behind his mighty hologram.

the cast was great i have to say. i had a feeling daisy ridley would be a bit stiff, and while you could tell it was her first big role, she didnt get swallowed up by the sweeping plot. isaac, boyega, hell even ford all brought it. driver has the intensity of a smouldering, angsty young jedi. im interested to see where they take his character

Yep, they nailed the cast. All the newcomers are great, and they're given far better material to work with than Jake Lloyd and Natalie Portman got. The one animated character with a real role played by Lupita Nyong'o is no worse than Yoda either.

He got wasted primarily because he just took a direct hit, to the stomach, from the gun that they spent half the movie explaining was more than your average blaster.

He was a pretty wanky enemy by that point anyway; literally from the moment he first took his mask off, he started being rubbish.
