They're not more popular on here than other places. To be honest it seems like they're more disliked here. The only comics I've ever read are Donald Duck etc.

this forum is a fairly normal cross section of people that enjoy mainstream cinema v.s. the more niche stuff, i haven't noticed a slant in either direction

I grew up reading some of the comics, but not all of them. Spider-Man, Daredevil, Superman and Batman mainly.

Nope, and I don't really like all this stuff (though some of it's fine / no worse than the mean).

But the sheer commercial juggernaut of Marvel is becoming quite a phenomenon.

Yeah that's pretty much the reason Burns, feels like I read a lot of posts about those films.

I've seen one of the Avengers films and another Marvel flick I can't even remember the title of, finished the first only because I was in the cinema on a date and turned off the second after maybe 15 minutes.

Yeah but there's good and bad mainstream cinema, everything Marvel I've seen was a slant in the garbage direction

marvel have churned out some very average stuff for sure. about 30% of what they've made are what i'd consider good genre film/televsion

agree with burnsy but would take it a step further that it's the disney behemoth that's incredible. they'll be cranking 3-4 marvel/star wars movies per year until the end of time. that's an unheard of level of long term box office domination

I don't follow their films but I wouldn't be surprised if Disney could release ten Star Wars episodes a year, their revenue is higher than most countries' GDP.

I think Disney only have 1-2 films planned a year for the new franchise-era Star Wars? More than enough I suspect.

I'm looking forward to those much more than the continuation of the Marvel saga(s) at this point, but if Force Awakens turns out to be a dud that'll stop in its tracks.

I think there's a lot of interest in these films from some perspectives but I'm not really looking forward to Civil War, the plot looks unconvincing to me and I'm completely over Robert Downey's egotistic motormouth mode.

Think I'm going to watch all the Star Wars movies again soon to get up to speed. Yes, even the last three! 🙂

Happily for some of you, the Marvel saga ends in 2019. Though they'll probably reboot after that. 🙂

Watched all six SW movies a couple of weeks ago. Episode I and II were even worse than I remembered.

The prequels are truly awful. Fortunately there isn't a person alive who'll be upset when Disney announce in a few years they're completely redoing them with a new cast.

Fully expect there to be few or no tie-ins to any prequel material in the new trilogy.

Saw Spectre yesterday. Was a pretty formulaic, typical Bond film I thought. Was good but not as good as Skyfall IMO.

Went to see New World Towers last week. A film about Blur reforming and making The Magic Whip, it was profoundly affecting, hilarious and, obviously, it had a banging soundtrack.

Right, couple of recommendations.

SUFFRAGETTE. Found it genuinely good and moving, despite the risk of it being a little bit rose-tinted and gauze-lensed it managed to keep some sort of rein on the material. Fine perspective on how women fought for the vote in the UK. ★★★★

TANGERINES. Beautifully scripted pacifist film about a conflict I previously knew little or nothing about, the Abkhazian separatist war of the early 90s in northern Georgia. Very poignant and insightful with some great comic moments. ★★★★

Finally got round to watching citizenfour. I've read quite a bit about Snowden of course, and always meant to see this one. The look on Snowden at the end when he is told about what has to be the Drone Papers is disturbing. I mean, when a guy like him, with the knowledge he has, is shocked about what the US government is doing - that's not good.
