Yeah, I agree with you Bandy, it's to do with his use of light and colour, it's interesting because his films have a visual kinship that goes way beyond their diverse subject matter.
I didn't find it particularly Gothic, it was far too arch for that, and lacking in the sense of vastness that characterises the Gothic. Macbeth was closer to that mark artistically.
The story is similar to that of Dracula (with Cumberland as Transylvania) but arch as all fuck and all rather predictable. It was still fun, though.
