I read somewhere that Fassbender explored the notion that Macbeth was suffering post traumatic stress disorder, which ties in with the haunted, weary and doomed figure that we see from the beginning.
On a less relevant note - Fassbender grew up a 25 minute drive away from me, and I never once saw him or if I did he didn't stand out in a crowd.
Same with Cillian Murphy, seen him a good few times in my local and he's a midget.
