Agree with this, it was wonderfully acted and shot, the action scenes were superb but... it was lacking any sort of story. I was expecting either an engaging plot, or to learn more about the Mexican drug wars, we didn't really get either.

It was very lightweight despite its pretensions, yeah—didn't articulate any theory of the basis of the drug trade and drug wars.

You can and do get 'ooh Mexican cartels are really, really, really evil' in almost any US crime drama these days (True Detective, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, etc). When a serious film takes on the subject you expect forensic research and some degree of thoughtfulness.

Traffic was a flawed movie but it was already well ahead of Sicario in depicting the sweep of factors that are involved, and it was made fifteen years ago.

I watched Southpaw last night. I'm not sure what I thought about the film as a whole, but it was easily the best acted boxing film I've ever seen. I can't think of any other that comes even close. Maybe the first Rocky. I liked the friction between the perspective of the protagonist and his own redemption story that the narrative was building up. That's great writing right there. I was a bit shocked to see that Kurt Sutter had penned the script after the steaming pile of shit that was Sons of Anarchy, but good on him.

Best boxing film as far as making the boxing look realistic is the Daniel Day-Lewis one for me. Best boxing flick as a whole probably Raging Bull, even though it's a below par performance from De Niro compared with his other films from the era.

Watched the Freedom Writers the other day. A little cliche at times but a good watch. Don't really buy that rival gang members would drop their differences or their affiliations so easily.

The Fighter and Million Dollar Baby spring to mind, although the former had Wahlberg in it.

Thanks for the reminder, definitely need to watch that one. Day-Lewis is one of the most engaging actors I've ever watched, I also his he prepared for the film by training with Barry McGuigan who is one of my favourite boxers to boot.

He is immense. Always knocks it out of the park.

Finally watched Mad Max: Fury Road. The 97% on Rotten Tomatoes created unrealistic expectations. I loved the vivid action, but an hour in, I felt like I had been in the longest non-stop car chase. I thought Ronin's was long, but this stretched forever, and I still had no idea who this Mad Max was an hour into the movie. Movie seemed a bit weirdly named to be honest. Should've been called Furiosa.

Thought 'Me, Earl and the Dying Girl' was really good.

Some interesting cinematography and enjoyable characters.

Saw Holmes, which is very different from other Sherlock Holmes movies/tv shows. Liked it a lot, and mainly because Ian Mckellen is as unbelievably good as he almost always is.

Planning a possible Sicario/ Martian double bill at the weekend.

Saw Macbeth on Friday night and thought it was brilliant. Loved the visual style of it, the sound design and the empty heart at the centre of Fassbender's Macbeth.

And it's always good to see Paddy Considine on screen.
