Watched Age of Ultron last night. Wasn't blown away like I was by the first one. Probably got to do with build up and expectations. Still some breathtaking sequences. I did not leave disappointed.

I'm not even talking about plot tropes here, there's just some blatant re-using of scenes. Even fanboys will tire of it.

The only saving grace was the beginning, the end and Cobie smuldering. It was a decent climax which is funny cos there was a trend of piss-poor endings to good movies. The 3d was poorly implemented, the banter that brought the first movie to life stuttered and stretched, the non-creative baddies laughable despite a great performance, the new characters so so underwhelming. Ashley Olsen seems perpetually hunched over- did she grow up slouching in every seat?

James Spader was one of the redeeming things about it in my opinion. I don't like 3D in general, and this was no exception.

Also, Days of Future Past's Quicksilver > Avengers' Quicksilver.

Would you put in a spoiler some of the re-used scenes you were talking about? That's interesting.

saw it with tempered expectations. its was an ok marvel flick. i still find captain america 2 to be the pick of the bunch since the first iron man

Jimmy's Hall—Ken Loach film from last year.

After The Wind That Shakes The Barley, which I thought was brilliant, I have to admit this one played out like a communist fairy tale (even though it's a true story).

The acting is the movie. It's a character piece in the truest sense of the word, like Taxi Driver. Everything around it doesn't really matter, still the putting out the oil fire scene is the most excellent movie making you'll ever see.

It's a brilliant film, very pure.

It's funny that when it came out it was around the same time as No Country For Old Men, and they were widely compared and acclaimed. Much better film than No Country in a lot of ways.

I think No Country is a great film in it's own right and helped made 2007 my favourite year ever for movies, (Blood, No Country, Zodiac, Michael Clayton, Eastern Promises, The Assassination of Jesse James, Hot Fuzz). But There Will Be Blood is on another level and definitely the best movie of the lot. Should have gotten Best Picture that year.

I think No Country's classic too, but it's ever so slightly meaningless because of the lack of authenticity of Chigurh as a character.

What's Zodiac like? Only one of those I haven't seen.

Zodiac is a great thriller. Finchers best movie along with Fight Club.

The score in There Will Be Blood is epic.

On Avengers - movie was decent but not as enjoyable as the first Avengers or Winter Soldier. A few things that I thought they did wrong

i. the main villain was a little too cartoonish. it was hard to take him seriously, so it was hard to think of him as a threat.
ii. too many bloody characters. nobody got sufficient screen time. it was like watching Short Cuts or something. you need to become immersed in characters, the way you can in the Dark Knight trilogy.
iii. too many monologues. guys ranting on about lord knows what
iv. not enough humor. the first one had some truly hilarious moments. this movie had the hammer contest and little else to crack you up. Tony Stark lacked his charm. seemed like he was played by a man picking up a paycheck

Factory issue mediocrity by the sound of it. Going to skip it.

I saw Age of Ultron this week too. Thought it was a lot better than the first. Not as tidy but had a bit more going on. Much more Whedony, has that Buffy thing of exploring the cost of being a hero. The action was pretty much the Marvel blueprint stuff but the bits between the action were more interesting than Assemble.

Ultron himself was a bit of a mess. The Scarlet Witch was a great villain though, worked very well. I thought the Avengers we're all well served TBH, maybe CA and Thor could have had more but sure they have their own films for that. Hawkeye actually felt like a character for the first time too and the new guys were well introduced.

I would say Marvel are at their best over the last year or so. Winter Soldier, GotG and Ultron are 3 of, if not the 3 best from Marvel Studios so far.
