But anyway, let's not kid ourselves; the wii U flopped largely because Nintendo forgot to advertise it.
And because of the name. Should have gone with something that didn't sound like a Wii add-on.
Anyway, how much did the Wii sell? 100 million units worldwide in the span of 7 years? They must have pushed a few hundred million copies of their own games too. Iwata is the real world equivalent of Scrooge McDuck. It's the third-party developers who tend to lose money on Nintendo consoles.
Wii 2 or Wii HD were too obvious for people getting paid literally millions of pounds to make these decisions.
For me, even worse was the fact that they had basically 18 months to fix any misconception and didn't. "Introducing the New Wii to all of U, all the fun U remember and now in HD. (U)pgrade to the all new Nintendo Wii U." - that took me all of five seconds. Yay me.

The Wii U is sold below cost.
What do you reckon they need to do Cap? Match the graphical power of Sony & Microsoft or keep it at a lower price range for affordability but miss out on a lot of gamers who want the raw powers and graphics to match when all they play is COD.....
Analysts are calling for mobile gaming and Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said
“We are thinking about a new business structure,” Iwata said at a press conference yesterday in Osaka, Japan. “Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It’s not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone.”
I wonder if what means they are going to be more orientated on hand held devices.
My personal opinion is that there is still a significant market for 'casual' and local multiplayer games. I have no real way to prove this, but the fact that Just Dance on the Wii still consistently charts worldwide suggests to me that there is a hunger there if someone would cater to that audience.
Keep the system relatively cheap, advertise it, sell it. Secure the 'other' AAA games like minecraft and Skylanders, augment them with the 20 odd games nintendo release per year. Create a good eshop environment for indies (which nintendo have already done apparently) and augment that with lighter first party content. Job done.
Fuck the 'hardcore' right off because they don't want to know and don't care. That's life.
