will steam box be worth getting and is it a pc or a console?

It's a prebuilt PC, technically. Can't see how it would be worth getting if you already have a decent (i.e. a non-laptop) computer, unless you absolutely want to play the games from your couch. I already to that sometimes, though. A £30 HDMI cable is all it takes.

I might try to install SteamOS on my desktop in the future though. The idea is good.

It's a PC running an OS based off of Linux.

I don't see the point in buying it, if you have a PC you can play valve games anyway, and you'll be able to play whatever is released for it.

EDIT: oh, and the controller looks shit. Dual trackpads ffs.

The controller looks terrible too. There will probably be a couple third-party improvements released fairly quickly though.

Edit: What Irish said, basically. I'll be surprised if any pad they ever come up with comes even close to just plugging an Xbox 360 controller into your computer.

Makes no sense when you can just buy a midrange, mediacentric games system specifically designed for the living room already. They have better, albeit more expensive games too.

That's the steambox btw, only difference will be a steam sticker on the top and the proprietary controller, which is for fucking casuals.

That's not THE steambox. The controller is a long way from being for casual players in my opinion; it's still in development and is supposed to replicate a mouse and keyboard.

Huh, those specs look good actually. Wonder what the price point will be, that looks expensive.

I posted the GBOX because they gave them out loaded up with steamOS at a recent conference.

The controller will be nothing like a mouse + keyboard imo, if multiplayer can be played against people on an actual PC then the steamboxers (?) will get completely destroyed on FPS games.

From 500 up to a whopping 6k (dollars). You shouldn't judge the controller until you've tried it. My eyes tell me that Valve aren't lying and if you watch a good demo, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Makes no real difference to me anyway, I'm a console gamer and I don't play FPS games.

It may be fanboyish but I trust Valve to deliver a good product. Just wish they'd do HL3...

You can just build one yourself, peps. Not sure what they are going to charge for the controller, but that and the OS are basically all there is to it.

The actual Valve boxes seem like they may be custom orders rather than mass produced, although they have yet to confirm their plans for hardware.

Not played it a huge amount really. Forza and Battlefield are fun for about 30 minutes, both look incredible, but i find em a little dull tbh.

Assassins Creed is a much better game, but only played it for a couple of hours so far.
