I see people saying that now for any sort of 3rd person action open world that has side quests, its just lazy, hacky reviewing. Game reviewers are shit and if games don't click very early they tend to shit on them a bit. Another great game they said that about was HZD and GoT is far closer to that than any Assassins game IMO.
I don't know about lazy. I haven't seen anyone say it neither about RDR2 nor The Witcher, for example. Although I loved HZD that was mostly because I thought the concept and the combat was fantastic. The characters and the sidequests were so so. The combat in AC however is very generic and they've also moved away from stealth, which has angered a lot of the fanbase. Did you enjoy the combat in GoT?
Yeah the combat is probably the best part of it. The sword fighting is deep enough to keep it interesting, its actually a bit intimidating at first but once you unlock a couple of moves its a lot more manageable. There is a lot of freedom to the combat too. You can do stand offs, just run in and go for it head on, sneak around and pick people off one by one, clear a few out with bow and arrows first, etc Stops it from getting too repetitive when you are clearing out camps, etc Plus it all feels very fluid. I really hated the combat in most AC games when you had a load of guys around you, it was too button mashy, this is much more focussed. It also just feels really satisfying to cut through a load of Mongols or to sneak up and slaughter a camp leader.
As for the review stuff. RDR2 is Rockstar some comes with a built in respect. Witcher almost proves the point to me, I didn't like Witcher much because the quests were boring to me mechanically, reviewers loved them due to their stories. In GoT I think the mechanics keep it interesting.
I really think HZD is the closest comparison. Both beautiful worlds and both having really satisfying mechanics. In fact their are tons of parallels now that I think about it. Climbing to shrines is like a more intense version of climbing those massive robots to stab their heads.
