Taxes and generally higher prices. Also the Norwegian Krone isn't doing very well, so it's even more expensive. By comparison, the PS4 was actually $670, but that was only 4000 NOK at the time.

Maybe you're right. Then again my OG PS4 (£399 but I only bought it as a birthday present for my little brother who was turning 13 at the time) started sounding like a jet engine very soon afterwards. Also the V1 controllers that came with the OG PS4 had joysticks that peeled off, something that the newer versions didn't.
Ignoring the price I paid for the OG PS4 at launch, there are definitely some very good deals to be had at times. I moved out of the family home and starting living abroad around the time the PS4 slim came out and bought one for myself at around £199 with Horizon and am extra pad although there was a good deal going on at Argos. Sold it for around £180 about a 10 months later and bought a PS4 Pro for £230 from shopto.com.
Even the Nintendo Switch when it came out was around £350 and regularly wehnt for £299 up autumn 2019 when the new version with the better processor came out. Managed to get that last October for £210 from very.co.uk.
Consoles generally seem to be overpriced, lacking in content, and exposed to hardware issues at launch and I always prefer to wait a year or two until they sort out any bugs, built a proper collection of games available as well as dropping to reasonable prices.
Agree about the lacking in content part. Launch titles are rarely good since developers haven't learnt how to fully utilize the new system yet. They also tend to focus much more on graphics than gameplay, like they're just a showcase for how games will look from now on.
It has to be said that I don't have a PS4 Pro, so I'll also buy the PS5 to play PS4 games. Many of the newer ones can be played in higher resolution or with better frame rate than on the OG PS4 that I have. And it's probably true that there are good deals every now and then, to be honest I just checked what the cheapest price was just at the moment.
The controller thing didn't bother me much though, as you could just deliver it to wherever you bought it and get a free replacement. All in all I don't think consoles are overpriced for what I get out of them, but that's individual of course. I certainly get more joy out of one than a $800 phone that I buy three times as often.
