Definitely. I think it's funny that people talk so much about VR when it's the AR train that will really help establish the technique. That's where the real-world application is at.

Yeah this is going to launch it into the stratosphere. We pitched a few advertisers with ideas similar to Pokemon Go. Had the idea for Cadbury to do an easter egg hunt app that was very similar. Pitched grants schemes for arts and tech with an idea for virtual grafitti that had a load of social media depth to it too. I bet if I pitched the same idea, to the same people next week I'd get funding.

I got the app a few mins ago, caught my first Pokemon on my desk, but it doesn't appeal to me at all to be honest. The only thing I liked about Pokemon as a kid was the cartoon, rooting for Team Rocket. Using the GPS and the phone camera seems like a quick way to drain the battery.

The battery drain is a concern - I think there's some way of downloading the maps 'offline'. Also there's a battery savings mode in the settings which reduces the strain

The anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church in the US is the location of a "gym" in the game, and players planted a pink "Clefairy" Pokemon called Love is Love there. The church has responded with a series of social media posts calling the Pokemon a sodomite.

I was a kid in the late 90s (I'm 29 now), but was never into Pokemon. My younger brother was and had a big bust up with his best friend at the time over the trading cards. 😆

same here. i never played or watched pokemon, and i'm 29

this new app is blowing up though. i'm seeing stories of small businesses leveraging the app to get more customers, by somehow making rare pokemon appear in/around their place of business.

Just had a go with the HTC Vive in a shop which has it for demos this week. Played a game where I was shooting arrows at bad guys, pretty amazing.

So after giving Pokemon Go a road test I really don't see what the bid deal is, the AR aspect isn't particularly amazing and finding/collecting Pokemon is a pretty dull task. I'd compare it to scanning planets in Mass Effect, ridiculously tedious and boring but you do it anyway.

But I actually agree with you, it's driven on nostalgia and familiarity rather than gameplay. That being said, if Nintendo provided the rights to actually have combat and mirrored it to the original Gameboy games, I'd say it would be a success from a gameplay point of view as well

I reckon the game will change a lot. It's quite easy to see how it can become better, and it probably will be. Battles and trading should be the first features to arrive.

It's a free-to-play game. Getting half of a good experience is part of the idea. They'll get people on board and then add improvements at a cost which some people will pay for. A small group of people will get caught up in the mechanics and pay a lot. I like Pokemon Go but it's a nasty kind of game design.

Have you heard about League of Legends? Microtransactions certainly don't mean you need to get "half of a good experience".

Combat and trading are being added in the next patch. The current version is technically still in beta so there are lots of features that will be added in the near future.
