Isn't Witcher significantly bigger? I wouldn't expect an RPG like Witcher to have as refined movement, combat, etc as action games like AC and the Naughty Dog games. And the ND games are pretty on the rails too.

There's a lot more lore and stuff in general to do in Skyrim (and Fallout 4) though. I feel that point often gets overlooked when people are discussing the sheer size of virtual worlds. Bethesda have been around for long enough to figure out how to add depth to some of this stuff. There's still plenty of work to do (they should arguably take a step back and ponder what made Morrowind so unique) but their games have a level of complexity to them that CD Projekt are lacking. I grew pretty bored by the world in Witcher 3, for instance. It's a very good game, but unless you're not exploring through a specific questline it gets a little stale and uneventful. And I'm just more into the emergent narrative that arises through the wonder of discovery.

Surely Skyrim is the one game where Bethesda didn't add any depth? The experience was pretty vanilla until you started modding the game. There's plenty of lore but it was never interwoven in any meaningful way.

I still thought it was better than both Oblivion and the Witcher games in that aspect, albeit a far cry from Morrowind. I think they brought back a lot of the regional shifting too that was lacking from the predecessor. Ultimately the decision to center development around console platforms seems to have screwed them massively, though. It's not very surprising that they're remastering the game right now.

Yeah its a good point. The fallout 4 map isn't really that big, smaller than skyrim for instance, but because it's such a densely packed city in the middle it has much more depth than just a load of the hilly areas in Skyrim.

I do the same as Qs with new games and chuck it in immediately to get installing everything done so it can be ready when I'm ready to start.

Yeah, I've played all these games and Witcher seems by far the hugest. A bit too huge for my taste, to be honest—I'm someone who doesn't like to game that much, and likes to finish things completely, so it's a bit irritating.

I don't see any real relationship between the mechanics of collision, control and the world size, though. Well other than the purest argument that Projekt Red were defunding programming and quality, and just adding more level designers to the project.

This clumsy Geralt bloke irritates me the most when I have to interact with stuff. He has to be perfectly positioned to open doors, activate shit, or talk to people, and it just doesn't feel natural getting him there. Took me way too much time to open those chests with goodies while diving right at the beginning of the game for instance. I have no recollection of this bugging me neither in Fallout nor Skyrim, but it certainly does here.

I was just a touch old for the Pokemon craze originally but I definitely want to play Go. It looks really cool and I did a project on augmented reality back in college that we then tried to pitch around Dublin that people never really grasped so I love seeing this do well as its kind of like proof that we were right about this shit 6 or 7 years ago.

Yeah, me too. This stuff's been talked about, and predicted at arts and technology events I've been to for years. I have a bunch of friends who got pretty culty about Ingress, comes up in Gibson's novels, rudimentary applications have been being developed in spatial and positioning technology, which is my field, for many years.

It's exciting to see AR hit mass media in a big way, something genuinely new that changes the way people interact. I'm not playing it, but I've already had some hilarious experiences with people who are. Very interested to see what the next big splash is, but I think Pokémon Go has Steve-Jobsed "inventing" AR for now. 🙂
