😆 My brother wants this game for Christmas.. How old do you guys think one should be before playing it? He's probably too young, but at the same time I save money I would've spent on buying it for myself. Quite a moral dilemma.

Think my soon 15 year old would enjoy the going around and shooting stuff with cool guns, but less everything that has to do with the settlements.

There was a bobblehead right? All of them were ghoulified, but they might have been raiders too. I feel less bad about shooting them in that case. The game seemed to imply that they'd been stuck there since the bombs fell and the radiation had turned them into ghouls.

Yep booblehead. Were they ghoulified, I didn't really notice if they were and now that I think of it they were probably gunners when I think of how tough they were. Your story on the radiation makes sense though.

Awful pity you can't join the gunners in it. The start of the Brotherhood stuff is so incredibly boring.

Decided to not give a hoot about the settlements until I get the trade lines in place. As the settlements start to grow in number I find it terribly annoying to transport items between settlements to build basic things. So, for the time being I don't care if they don't have food, water, enough beds and defense. I'll do a few more level ups until I go for the trade things, and in the meantime I'll just help them out when raiders attack and such.

Oh, and sleeping with your companion, often, actually helps you to level up faster. 🙂

How do you get to these 'railway quests'?

You mean the railroad? You need to activate a quest called Road to Freedom in order to find them. The easiest way is to just continue the main storyline. It'll lead you to them.

Damn, that quest has been lost somehow! I got to Boston, on another quest so I didn't want to pursue this one at that time, and now I can't for some reason continue. I can't get a marker up on my map. 🙁

You won't get a quest marker for that one, I think, because the quest is orientation-based. You need to find the way yourself.

It begins around Swan Pond, just behind the entrance to the subway leading into the vault where you originally found Nick. There's a fountain with a sign beneath it that says something like "Freedom trail begins here", and next to it is a pod with a tour robot. Search the ground around the fountain for a clue. Once you find it you should be able to figure out what to do next.

You need a pen and a piece of paper for this one.

Btw, you should have said that you need to be reasonably strong BEFORE you explore that swan pond! 🙂

You don't! Just make sure you're carrying a fat boy and a bunch of bottlecap mines and you should be alright. Also, take out one of Swan's legs first to slow him down.

There's a tank vehicle parked next to the pond. It makes for a great shelter to hide in between shots.

Yeah, well I didn't get a Fat Man until I was reasonably strong, and I haven't actually used it at all. I prefer the missile launcher tbh. If you could get one of the PC mods where you can shoot babies or teddy bears as nukes with your Fat Man though... 🙂
Speaking of strength, you choose one of perks where non automatic rifles do more damage, then that REALLY improves stopping power. My combat shotgun, with mods, is now at 121 AP which is pretty amazing, and I think there is at least another level on that perk. My sniper rifle is at 90 as well, and with the sneak attack bonus you get one shot takes out most opponents.

Fucking hell! Just went through the first Railroad mission at Slocum Joe's and was going absolutely crazy about how to access the inaccessible door at the end. Looked, and looked, went back further and further to see if I'd missed something, went ahead to the upper level and looked - nothing. Finally went online to try to solve this shit, and then it turns out it's a fucking BUG! That Deacon fella just stood there like an idiot and did nothing! A save and a reload later, the dude finally opens the door. Was driving me absolute bonkers, and took me forever. :angry:

Dunno. Feels like it goes against the whole point of relaxing and just having fun. What I do know is I've never played a game that required me to study and take notes. For one thing it would have given me something to use back in the day when my parents used to complain about playing so many games and not studying enough.
