I'd expected burnsy to have listed stuff like Age of Artistry: The Michelangelo Puzzle, Carpe Diem: Guillerme's Noble Quest or Virtuoso, but no, he's actually listed some of the most important, iconic games in PC gaming history! How can you not have heard of Warcraft, Civilization, and Sim City?

Dune 2 is the grandfather of the real time strategy genre, and while X-COM and its sequels are more of a gaming-evolutionary dead-end, the series was a collossus of early PC gaming.

I'll give you One Must Fall 2097, though. Burnsy, that was fucking rubbish 😆

Yeah, this was the early 90s Pepe, before I had a disposable income and became the world's biggest pseudo-intellectual obscurantist poseur.

But seriously Armor, I can't believe you haven't heard of half of those games, even if you're probably a decade or more younger than me (I'm 32). Dune 2 and Warcraft 1 were essentially the same game, and direct ancestors of Starcraft etc.

Yeah, it was a pretty terrible game - the characters were all similar, and silly - but it was better than the PC versions of Street Fighter 2 and I didn't have a console. It was mana from heaven at the time. Might not have been quite as awesome as Tongue of the Fatman of course 😉

Agreed. But then I'm an old fart who dropped the Civilisation series when the graphics went isometric instead of bird's-eye.

Did anyone else ever edit the text files used for the "diplomacy" gameplay in the original Civ?

I have only ever played two PC games in my whole life, Monkey Island 2 and Champ/football manager in it's various guises.

No idea, not even out yet. Friend of mine is a games designer, and reckons it's a quantum leap forward in terms of in-game character modelling.

The progress made on games never ceases to amaze me though. Just thought it looked seriously impressive.

Right, thanks. This guy I knew left to work on the project back in early 2008, and it had already been coming to fruition for a while at that point. I'm not even sure if he's still there. New games projects nowadays seem to take a fucking age to get into production.

The level of detail is extraordinary, often in places you don't notice.

My mate works on in-game physics, but the areas of the game that just one person works on can be extraordinarily narrow. He was, for example, responsible for designing and drawing the hands of a driver in a particular racing game, but almost nothing else.

Also, saw the trailer for Mass Effect 3 yesterday. Already excited and haven't finished Mass Effect 2 yet!

mass effect 2 was meh. not nearly as good as me1. plot wasn't as engaging, gameplay was too linear (run, duck/cover and shoot) and they had removed too many rpg elements.

Two of my all time favorites were Max Payne I and II. Absolutely loved them. May actually play them again one of these days!

Yeah, it basically felt like a buildup to the 3rd game, nothing really happened.

But I actually thought the gameplay was better in the second.

I hate scanning plannets for minerals, so frustrating and boring yet I can't seem to stop doing it.
