To be fair, I could probably live with something like that for 2/3 meals a day, but I think I would need a proper dinner.

I may end up doing the same tbh, brilliant for when you have no time for breakfast in the morning and for getting a meal in between classes at lunch time. Well, I say brilliant but time will tell 🙂

Apparently flatulence goes through the roof for the first 2 weeks due to the fibre 😆 Is it cruel of me to start this during exam week when I'll be in a room surrounded by people for 4 hour periods? :saint:

I've considered things like that several times, but lack the willpower to try.

You may be cruel, but what sounds far more cruel.. Exams right after Christmas holiday?!

get a CT scan/x-ray done asap - it's worth knowing if you've done a disc or not.

static yoga-type core exercises, stretching, and constant walks have helped the healing process. i'm at 8 weeks since it happened and i feel almost back to normal. they say it typically takes 6-12 weeks for disc injuries to heal, depending on severity. last thing you want to do is stay in bed for prolonged periods, which is the mistake i made the first few days

problem with me is i hadn't worked out in over 6 months and had put extra weight. weak core + extra body weight = recipe for trouble. don't skimp on core exercises is the ultimate lesson i learned. i'd recommend focusing on dropping a few kilos and focusing on your core for a while, before you get back to doing anything too explosive

Think I'm almost better, still aches when I stand in one place and sometimes when walking about but I've got my mobility back. Going to the gym this week and doing some cardio to test it out. The weights can wait a while longer.

Is there much point in doing a scan? Doesn't change the recovery does it?

some people don't bother with a scan for back injuries. but it helps to know the severity, and how far the disc has pushed out (if at all).

I know, it fucking sucks. First semester exams are always in the beginning of January, fucking ruins christmas 🙁

Over Christmas I was chatting with friends and family members who are in the UK for uni, and it's a fucking lark!! 8 hours of class per week, exams in December (that you can resit pretty much immediately if you fail), and no exams for people in first year because the special little snowflakes are "adapting." Surprisingly Oxford and Cambridge are the worst of the bunch, piss easy once you get in.

Meanwhile, I've had 30 hours of class per week + weekly written assignments, exams in first year (first year of law in my uni has a 30% pass rate btw), and if you fail you resit months later which means that you've forgotten it all by the time you retake the exam.

Definitely doing my master's degree in the UK.

In Norway all the universities have the same setup:
August-December: subjects
December: Exams
December-January Christmas
january-May/June: New subjects
May/June: Exams
Summer
Repeat

Thought it was like that everywhere tbh. Can't see the point of having the exams after Christmas.

I'm in my final year of law in Bordeaux, we've gone from like 2500 in first year to about 300 in 3rd year. First year is brutal, there are too many students so they do everything they can to get rid of everyone, it gets easier after that.

We have:

mid September- mid December: First semester
December-January: Christmas break
early January: First semester exams
End of january - end of April: Second semester
Early May: Second semester exams
Mid June - mid July: Resits for 1st and 2nd semester
Summer
Repeat

Similar to that in law here too as there are loads of students in the first year and only a fraction go through to the 2nd year. My brother succeeded and is now working at one of the big law firms in Auckland.

On the topic of diet I made some changes a couple of months ago having remained constant at my heaviest adult weight for a while. I exercise most days with playing sports (football and tennis) plus going to the gym so only tend to give myself one day off a week - usually Sunday the day after a match. But my weight wasn't changing so decided to cut down on carbs - basically cut out bread which I ate a lot of. So instead of toast or a big bowl of cereal I've been having a protein shake and a banana for breakfast, and salads for lunch instead of sandwiches. Still having "proper" dinners but slightly smaller portions.

Set what I thought was a quite ambitious goal of losing 10kg and as at my last weigh in just before Xmas I'd lost 8.3kg. Hadn't expected it to come off as quickly as this. Haven't really changed my exercise much, maybe hit the gym slightly harder with an actual goal in mind but it's mainly just the bread and I guess the protein shake. Been enjoying the salads too, it's really just the same stuff I'd have in a sandwich anyway but minus the bread. I give myself one treat day where I don't worry about it (usually the day off exercise) and have something like a subway or a pizza. Think it's important to still treat yourself, and this makes it a treat to look forward to not a regular thing.

That's great Invis. I've been thinking about trying something similar myself. How did you find your appetite switching to the shake and salads? I always eat a decent breakfast and lunch and would worry abiut feeling hungry all day.

It's been fine, haven't been feeling hungry all day and I find the shake quite filling. Maybe a bit more hungry closer to dinner sometimes. Sometimes have a shake after the gym too, or fruit for morning/afternoon snacks. Give it a go for a couple of weeks and see how you feel.

Yeah i might do. Started doing more exercise before the xmas break and feeling much better for it. Thinking i might need to change the diet up a bit to lose a little more weight though. Turned 38 a couple of days ago and feeling like i need to get in better shape this year.

We recently got those Jawbone wristbands - tracks walking, activity/exercise (can track heart rate for those get the newer version). But the bit that's really helping is that it tracks sleeping cycles. A few on here that have mentioned they struggle with that...get a sense of when you're likely to be tired and how to counter it. Its only purpose is to keep a record but it's working quite well - especially if your partner/family have it too for comparisons.

Just had my first post-Xmas weigh in and another 1.5kg down. Makes a total of 9.8kg so all going well I should reach my 10kg goal at the next weigh in. Quite happy with this as I had a lot more bread and desserts and things over the Xmas period as you do with family over that time. Managed to stick to my protein shake and banana breakfasts though and get some decent exercise, plus I've probably exercised a bit harder over the last 2 weeks thinking that I needed to work more off! At a weight I haven't been for 5 years now.

Just getting back into 5 asides after a month with no exercise, and all gluttony (December/early January is really the one time of year I say yes to every drink, every bite, every sleep in offered). Fuck me, I'm so far off the pace right now.

Update to the above, just had my next weigh in and another 1.3kg down so a total of 11.1kg and my original 10kg goal has been reached. Not far from getting back to the best shape I've ever been in now.

Have usually been weighing in fortnightly as I figured weekly didn't give enough time in between and there was potential to get disappointed if changes were small. Thought a fortnight gave enough time for a meaningful change. Hadn't weighed myself since the above due to having minor surgery on 28th Jan and then couldn't do too much in the way of sport and exercise for 2 weeks or so while recovering, so decided to wait until the 4th week back into everything. Pretty happy as had expected no change or even a slight gain after the time off exercise.

Doing a 4 day split these days? Some okay gains.

Struggle a bit with growth on lats and deltoids though.

Struggling to recover from a slipped disc in my neck for the past couple of months, major pain in the hole. Currently cycling 2x40 mins 5/6 days a week, doing yoga 5 days a week and doing some light gym work 4-5 times a week. Working hard at improving my posture too. Bah.
