So, decided to ramp up my sessions in the gym as my waistline is rapidly expanding to the point where my trousers no longer fit. Day 1 I got on the machine that works on the abs in between a couple of cardio workouts and while using it I feel a sharp twinge in my back. Only momentary and it goes away so I think nothing of it. Next day my lower back goes completely during football, don't know if it's related but I'm guessing the damage was done in the gym.
Been a week now and though I can now walk without too many problems real physical activity feels beyond me for at least another week, probably 3 or 4. Anyone know of any good ways to speed up the healing process? Last thing I need is two weeks at home immobilised on the sofa.
similar thing happened to me playing basketball - turns out i had a prolapsed disc 🙁
get a CT scan/x-ray done asap - it's worth knowing if you've done a disc or not.
static yoga-type core exercises, stretching, and constant walks have helped the healing process. i'm at 8 weeks since it happened and i feel almost back to normal. they say it typically takes 6-12 weeks for disc injuries to heal, depending on severity. last thing you want to do is stay in bed for prolonged periods, which is the mistake i made the first few days
problem with me is i hadn't worked out in over 6 months and had put extra weight. weak core + extra body weight = recipe for trouble. don't skimp on core exercises is the ultimate lesson i learned. i'd recommend focusing on dropping a few kilos and focusing on your core for a while, before you get back to doing anything too explosive
