I think people are expecting a Thierry Henry Mk II, look forget about about all this creation and assist and pass % bollocks, if a player does "nothing" but score a goal every other game he certainly merits inclusion.

He can beat a man & cause defenders problems by running at them, but that isn't what's helped him score this season.

None of his goals have come as a result of his dribbling skills, though his assist sort of did.

So the way I see it, if the goals dry up, will the dribbling be enough to make him a useful player? Considering his hopeless vision, I say no.

If the goals dry up over a decent period of time then ofcourse he should be dropped. But you could say the same about any striker.

Considering we have so many other players to mix and match with … if he stops making an impact he should definitely be dropped or rested, and quickly.

Our forwards should be judged almost entirely on their direct involvement in goals scored. 'Putting in a shift defensively', 'dragging defences out of shape', 'getting the knockdowns', 'providing an outlet' etc are nice to haves.

You could, but I don't think you'd find many who'd harm our player as much in the intervening games.

Agree, but only to a point. When it comes to Gervinho, I have no conviction at all that his recent goalscoring form is an indication of future goalscoring potential.

Asa, come on. Drop him for Giroud? You're talking about selecting the team not on form, but on a rather rigid (and so far, unjustified) expectation of form. Just makes no sense to me.

If Gervinho is bound to stop scoring, then let him stop, then drop him. Likewise if Giroud is bound to start, let him wait his turn, then start. That's normal.

I think form, in this case is misleading, and longer term over the season we're better off getting Giroud scoring than relying on Gervinho's hot streak continuing.

Otherwise, I think Goroud helps the team a little more even off form. So I'd have no issue taking the gamble.

If Wenger keeps picking Gervinho, he keeps scoring, and we keep winning, I'll be proven wrong, but my own feeling is that what Gervinho's done recently is more down to luck than form, and as such it's no reason to continue to select him.

This game? I'm talking about over the course of a season. If Gervinho keeps scuffing and shanking them in all season, I'll freely admit to calling this wrong.

Don't really feel happy backing Giroud to score either, given how poor I think he's looked so far as wel, but if I had to back one to be established in the position by Christmas, it'd be him.

Selection that doesn't need justification.
Quite possibly not apt to use it in this circumstance 🙂 - I'll change it to Giroud has done nothing that warrants starting him ahead of Gervinho.

I'd flip it round - Gervinho's scored a few, but is hardly undroppable / unrest-able.

Oh, I know. But for the purposes of friendly bragging rights, I'm talking about this game. After all, you'll look a bit of a goose if he does again deliver some sort of end product in this match.

I can tell you one thing, I'd certainly rather be backing Gervinho to score or assist in this game than Giroud, much as I don't write off the latter.
