I don't fully buy that. If you're giving out a yellow, there's no reason to take into account whether the player has already been booked and therefore will be sent off.

Anyway, what's really frustrating is the lack of consistency. I still wince every time a player kicks the ball away after the whistle is blown and doesn't get booked.

He is spot on, generally speaking, even if you have to ignore today's incident. You remember Van Bronckhorst being sent off at Anfield in 2001?

If the referee is sending off someone for diving he has to be absolutely sure it was a dive.

No he shouldn't. It's a yellow card so all he needs to be certain about is that he is comfortable in giving the yellow. Any preceding events in the game really shouldn't come into his decision making, nor should any further consequences as a result of issuing a yellow. Equal importance should be placed on every decision, whether a foul is in the box or corner, whether a card is first yellow or second, and whether a team has 11 players or 9. Anything contrary to that results in the inconsistencies that leave fans screaming about bias and imcompetence.

Namely, if you play the game then little rakes, trips and contacts like that do affect a player's motion and can easily lead to falls. It seems like you're making an over technical point.

He is biased, but generally speaking when he is quizzed about neutral stuffs he normally gets it spot on.

But Tony at the same time Torres made a meal of going down. The contact was light at best and would have had him falling forward like he did. Evans knew he touched him hence his reaction, but my initial reaction was that Torres got what he wanted from it.

His whole thing there about different types of diving is his excuse he uses for the likes of Young too.

He has a decent understanding of things and can be good sometimes but his bias is massive and things like the way he goes on about zonal marking annoys me. As I heard someone point out last week he's Englands defensive coach and they conceded on a corner a couple of weeks ago playing man to man. Every goal conceded at zonal isn't a systemic issue.

Even if the contact wasn't enough to make him roll like that it was enough to slow him, effect his balance, etc That makes it a foul. And unfortunately you have to go down to get free kick. I see our players get fouled all the time and not go down and not once does the ref call it back and give us the free. Its a sad reality the referees themselves have created. Torres cant be blamed for that.

The English teams are stronger than the Germans. Last weeks CL results were an anomaly. The Spanish teams are massively overrated due to playing against shite most weeks. Sure Barca could barely beat Celtic at home, Celtic wouldn't manage to make the play offs if they were in the Championship.

I'm playing devils advocate simply because it seemed like people were going overboard on the corruption/bias issue. Like i said in my initial post i thought it was debatable. To be honest I couldn't care either way. I'm not sticking up for either United or Chelsea.

I obviously take that into account. Even if someone doesn't play football, it's common sense. e.g. Ankle-taps are minimal contact but you can see the player lose balance and fall. But in this case I think he was looking for it and could've stayed on his feet. But obviously there was contact - and unfortunately if he had stayed on his feet but was slowed down, or stumbled a bit, then the referee don't tend to give those as fouls. So I understand why Torres went down. I understand why it's a free-kick. But I'm just saying it's not as clear cut as some think. At the same time, I also agree that the referee shouldn't book players for 'no contact diving' if they're not sure. Clattenberg can't be sure - it was a mistake from him.
