I think Kos is out of form and he's been total shit so far this season, butI also think he should get a proper run in the team.

My view is that Vermaelen has been decent by and large this season, the odd good game, the odd mediocre one, and that he's recieved an unwarranted amount of criticism. A large number of people on this forum have wanted him dropped even after he's played ok and despite the fact that Koscielny has been really poor. BUT, he has to come out of the team after today's performance, and we have to see if Kos can get last seasons form back.

I thought Koscielny was magnificent last season. And I think that's his true level. No doubt he has been bad so far this season but I would definitely play him alongside Vermaelen or Mertesacker. Once he plays himself into some form, there's something very tidy and efficient about Kos and he doesn't look as laboured as he has recently. Seems to read the game expertly.

I still think we have 3 excellent CBs. It's clear they have made more than their fair share of mistakes this season so I think they're due a flawless spell soon. Of course if it turns out these errors are the norm then I'll revise my opinion. But I rate our defenders. Just need Gibbs and Szczesny back and hopefully we can start to build something.

You can't give points like part of worst defence and say you judge him fairly as an individual. He was superb that season

It was hardly the only point I made about him, but still - he had some excellent periods last season, but he had some shockers too, and far more howlers than many here seem to admit. And all the while, our defence was shite.

Hmm, why would he think that?
It's not as if he's played superbly well on any of his outings this season.
Certainly not well enough that it looks like an unbelievable injustice that Vermaelen's been picked ahead of him.

Reckon Tim nailed it - tweedledum and tweedledee, I don't trust either of them to go through a game without committing some fatal error.

If you ignore the goals we conceded at the start of the season when the whole team was shite, our defence last season weren't too bad. That first few matches will take almost 20 goals away isn't it.

Its worth noting he had many partners last season, but he was consistently the best of the lot. Its also no coincidence he was head and shoulders the best french defender in euros and many big clubs were eyeing him in the transfer window. He also thoroughly owned all the top class strikers he played against last year. Aguero, Torres, Balotelli, Tevez were all in his pocket.

I'm sure if you discount every team's worst period of the season, their goal difference will look a whole lot better.

I concede he hasn't really staked his claim this season, but that's likely because he hasn't been given a consistent run of games this season. Last season, when given consistent playing time, he was excellent. Basically it comes down to my belief that he's simply a superior player to Vermaelen. Personally I do think it's an injustice he's not playing and it's a shame Wenger's put himself in a position where he can't drop Vermaelen even though he's playing poorly.

Sagna came back after a long injury and immediately performed. There's no excuse for Koscielny's form.

Do you really need a consistent run of games to not be horrible against Reading? Come on...

Thing is, we didn't even have a complete team before the transfer window ended!

Is Koscielny a better version of Senderos?

Honest question.

He can be great for 90 minutes and then make a mistake to cost us the game.

If it's one place we can't afford a mistake it's at the back.

For all the talk of Mertesacker being our worst central defender he hasn't put a foot wrong this season.

To answer my own question, sometimes he can pull a Senderos but I think he's a lot better than what he's shown us this season and once he cuts out the mistakes he'll be great.
