Lots of people were grumbling about TV last season.

As for giving Kos a hard time, nobody is saying he's crap they're just noting his poor form right now.

Personally I'd question why it's a good idea to unsettle the central pairing by dropping Vermaelen for Kos, particularly when Vermaelen's not been poor enough to warrant it and Koscielny has not been good enough to merit it.

I just think unsettling this partnership is the lesser of two evils. Valencia or Nani against Santos with RVP and Rooney in the box will just not end well.

In terms of risk, playing defenders out of position and playing an out of form Kos rates higher than sticking with Santos at left back . There's not much in it though.

But seriously, they're nothing alike. Santos is much more intelligent and aware as a footballer and their styles aren't similar at all. And off the pitch I'm not sure how much of a joker Santos is, strikes me as much more serious and professional (his fitness aside, though I'm not sure he can do much about it, brazilians tend to get fat as they reach the big 3 oh).

edit: oh God I just remembered Eboue's diving and play-acting. So glad we got rid of him...

Just as certain people are entitled to think that Kos is our best defender, it's my opinion that Vermaelen is a better player than him. I think Kos at his best is a superb technical defender, but I don't think he takes enough responsibility. Has an 'I'm alright Jack' sort of thing going on.

And I think Vermaelen has been pretty decent this year and Mertesacker and him have a good partnership going on.

biggus, weird that you think people are piling on kos. to me, his performances are overrated here and by arsenal fans in general. i agree he's got the talent, but he is consistently error prone, and his errors tend to lead to unnecessary goals. he has lapses in judgment and takes too many risks.

When he's low on confidence he becomes too eager to win the ball back or intercept it as early as he can

Lets take the og V's Chelsea for example, although he stuck out a foot and deflected it goalwards, it didn't look like it was going wide the deflection actually took it nearer to Mannone but he still couldn't reach it.
Two things occurred to me- Mannone doesn't command his area so he probably didn't give a shout so Kos had to go for it, or else none of the defenders trust Mannone so their duty is to clear first ask questions later.

Today's match is a potentially decisive one in the careers of our defenders. A solid defensive performance at OT from of Santos, Vermaelen or Mertesacker would be like gold for them, and us.

Papers seem somewhat convinced we'll start Verm and Mert through the centre.

I think they are/have been equally shit this season, but that one had the good fortune to have benefitted from Wenger's occasional stupidity when it comes to choice of Captains, and now we're stuck with him as a permanent first teamer, regardless of the form of the other shit defender

Most people recognise he's a bit dodgy, without giving him credit for the things he does well.

Weasily or not, I can't see how anyone can say Koscielny hasn't been the lesser of our 3 main centrehalves so far this season.
