personally, i do think koscielny has a bit of a weakness on aerial balls. i would like to see him partnered with mertesacker for a bit to see how he does with a different style of CB, and also playing on his preferred side.

for me, vermaelen and koscielny are roughly equivalent, but no way that vermaelen should be undroppable. he's not good enough to justify that.

I totally agree with you Kami, no one should be undroppable.
Lets not forget that we are playing with essentially a 3rd choice goalkeeper now, even Maldini and Adams would be a bit wary in trusting him.

AWOL? Koscielny abandoned two men at the far post for the sake of shinning it into his own net. Blame Mannone & Koscielny, but Vermaelen really is a stretch.

I think he's alluding to the fact that Vermaelen was playing as a CF at the time and gave away the free-kick desperately trying to recover his position.

vermaelen should be docked a week's pay anytime he ventures forward like that. know your place, you belgian twat, you're the captain for fucks sake.

bould's still got a lot of work to do to get defensive discipline to be automatic. seems like we can't drill it out of them. our forwards are afraid to shoot, while our defenders think they're michael laudrup.

Seems to be a lot of focus on Vermaelen's forward runs, I know they drive people mental but they are not the reason that we lost.

We lost because we didn't even bother to defend two free kicks.
Absolutely clueless. Really lacklustre, half hearted and disinterested. Nobody took responsibility or showed any determination to wipe out danger.
Tonnes of work still to be done in that area.

In any game, particularly against top teams with tricky technical players, free kicks will be conceded in danger areas, keeping them to a minimum by holding shape and timing tackles is obviously one priority, but in the likely event that one or two may be conceded we've got to actually defend them.

I'd agree with that. For all that it was bitterly disappointing, the match was decided by a handful of moments, and we arguably had better chances from open play.

Cech made more than one save better than Mannone would've had to to save either set piece, of course for the second one he was probably wondering what the fuck Koscielny was about to do.

It's troubling to have such an average shot stopper in goal, but he is not our first choice and we have to wear that.

I reckon Kos conceded that second goal because of the first. The mistake was still in his mind and that's why he has hung his leg out like that. Mannone is culpable on both goals but then, he's rubbish and we all know that.

Vermaelen had a bit of a mare.

All three should bow their heads in shame.

With Koscielny and Vermaelen at least you know that they can improve, Mannone is playing at his level.

Vermaelen was up front and was struggling to get goalside when Chelsea broke, hence the free kick.

Well it was actually Arteta who conceded the possession, and he too had abandoned his deep lying midfield position.

Should he not take some of the rap if we're retracing the events that led to the goal?

Vermaelen's tackle was dumb though, no doubt.

All of this is dodging the main point - the concession of the subsequent goal was down to abject defending and an error from Kos.

Conceding a free kick should not allow the opposition an odds on chance of scoring a goal.

Piss poor all around with the key culprits being Kos and Mannone.

It's important not to take the goal in isolation though; that leads to complacency and further problems. The play leading up to the goal was basic and all of the mistakes need to be addressed.

One other thing that pissed me off greatly was when Luiz got booked for diving. We were in possesion, about to launch a counter with six Chelsea players ahead of the ball and the ref called it back to book someone for diving. That's an outrageous call.

Kos was at fault for the goals. Maybe some blame to Mannone as well for being shit on set pieces.

The Vermaelen criticism is more a general one, not specific to yesterday. Giving away a needless freekick in no way excuses conceding that kind if goal from it, it just highlights a general issue with TV's defending that we saw at Montpellier as well.
