Best smart phone?

My options with my current contract are:

HTC one (25GB) @ 30€
Nokia 1020 (32GB) @ 100€
Nokia 1520 (32GB + micro SD) @ 100€
iPhone 5S (16GB) @ 250€

The iPhone really looks like terrible value. HTC one looks great for the price, but I think that the 1520 interests me most. I need to hold one though, just to see how big it is and whether it comfortably fits in my pocket.

Nokia maps, and the offline maps feature specifically, are big advantages.

Went to two stores today between classes, neither of them have it yet. It seems to only be available with one carrier for now (my carrier, luckily), so I'll try and drop by to one of their stores tomorrow if I have time.

I really should have played around with the galaxy note 3 or the HTC one max while in stores today, they're pretty much the same size as the 1520. Stupid on my behalf.

My Nokia Lumia 520 has just arrived from Vodafone.

Edit: Need to go and get a micro sim as I've only got the older larger one.

Well they didn't charge for the sim which was a bonus. Transferred my number and contacts for free although the contacts didn't come across so will have to go back and check with them, otherwise just enter them manually if need me. Probably don't need half of them anymore anyway!

S4 or htc 1? Was thinking the latter but sales assistant was just real trying to push me towards the S4.

My HTC One XL is great. Feels better in my hand than the S4s I've picked up, might just be prejudice though.

the 1520 is the 6" phone, right? if you're ok with the size, i can definitely recommend the OS and the hardware, though you already seem cool with the nokia/WP combo.

My fault, needed to go to the settings to import them. Like the usability so far but moving to a touch screen is going to take some getting used to. Typing messages seems quicker - I've found the most comfortable way so far is to hold it horizontal and use both thumbs.

That's how I type. I am actually contemplating a Note sized phone for my next phone; seems a decent compromise to a tablet.

Gesture / swipe keyboards are where it's at.

Can be slightly frustrating, but on the whole I find the experience much better than tap-per-letter with autocorrect.

Would recommend Swype or Google Keyboard if you're looking at it - in their current versions both are better than SwiftKey. Swype's more accurate but Google's got a slightly nicer keyboard layout.

Yep, 6" phone, going to try and test it in a shop today 🙂

BW: the HTC 1 XL pretty much the same size, you find the form factor ok then? I recall that you're quite tall though, probably have bigger hands than me. I'm only 5'10" so I'll have to see.

My hands aren't freakishly large for a guy who's 6'2", but I guess they're not tiny.

When I first got the phone I was a bit chary of the size but after about a fortnight it didn't seem like an issue at all.

Didn't get a chance to go to the store today, however after thinking about it I think that the 1520 is going to be a bit too cumbersome. Especially during the summer when in shorts, at the beach, or when going out.

I'm going to get a cheap Lumia 520 off contract, just to try out windows phone 8 for a while.

If I like the OS I'll upgrade and get the Lumia 929 when it comes out in January, or I'll get the iPhone 5S as my carrier upgrade if I don't like it. Once I've sold the 520 I should only make a net loss of about 30€, well worth it to let me test drive W8 for a month before making my decision.

The Lumia 929 is also well worth the wait, exact same specs as the 1520 (including 1080p) but on a 5" screen. Seems perfect, especially if I like W8 🙂

Only been using the Lumia 520 for a day but can recommend it so far. Pretty user friendly and seems a really good phone at that price point.
