We need someone else who can find the back of the net on a regular basis. A lot of our problems will be solved by making that one signing.

Having CBs who don´t gallop down the pitch to score every other attack may help us concede less goals as well.

When was the last time we conceded a goal from a run forward from one of the centrebacks, Rex?

My point is that with a more potent attacking threat then our defenders perhaps would focus more on actual defending. Needed.

Oh come on Tim wouldn't you rather blow £10m on a CB/DM who won't play either position much given our squad?

Rex, we're out of all the cups, 15 points off the top and have conceded more goals than West Brom. We need more than just two attacking players.

It's not quite as straightforward as that though.

We've showed League winning form for most of the season, barring the terrible start and during our injury crisis. I'm not saying we'd win the League with this squad next season; we wouldn't, but we're not quite as far away as you're implying.

It is that straight forward Ricky. Every year we show league winning form, every year we concede a ridiculous number of goals, every year we go through periods of shoddy form that see us fall short. That's why we always finish in the top four. Ask yourself why? You'll come to a fairly simple conclusion.

(this is the part where Biggus mentions Wenger)

He passing game is too poor to play in our midfield.

Just watched some YouTube clips of him. He looks very impressive indeed. I'm all for this.

Think he'd be used as a dm here, and cover for cb and lb. looks like mixture of vermaelen petit and van bommel

He's better than Vermaelen when he came here and is a unit. £7m would be a ridiculous steal.

Haven't watched him much this season, but there's no way I'd say he could come in this summer and start at the level Vermaelen was at right from the word go.

Think he'd be a great signing. Was surprised we went for Verm instead of him back in the day...I see why now, but singing this guy would give us "real" depth instead of just using a darker shade of blue.

Possibly, and with us being linked to M'Vila as well I think we'd be more interested in a holding midfielder than a CB, particularly with Song being a more offensive player this season. Otherwise I can't see why Wenger would even consider making a bid.

As a centre back, there's no way Vertonghen is going to replace Koscielny and Vermaelen, Mertesacker has done more than enough to justify being 3rd choice and Djourou's just signed a new contract. I don't think Djourou's half bad either, this time last year he was our best centre back. Obviously he's suffered from a lack of form but it's been compounded by sitting on the bench and it could happen to anyone.

I think our interest is very serious.

I too think Wenger might be looking to reshape our midfield a bit next season by bringing in an outright DM. We know he tried to sign M'Vila last summer. Younggunsblog claimed yesterday in the story about Song being offered a new 5 year deal that the plan was to move him slightly further up the field.

Why would he sign a defender if he wants to reshape midfield?
Could he not just sign a midfielder? M'vila perhaps?

That would be too obvious Y va. Someone HAS to play away from his favored position. Those are the rules! 🙂
