He is a big game league player but to never have scored in a final for us or France is poor for someone of his ability. Cant remember him scoring in Semi-Finals for us either.

At the time he suffered from snobbery - the idea that nothing of real quality came out of England. All footballing quality was contained in Spain in Italy. Sheva was a remarkable striker, but did he outplay Henry that season he picked up the best player?

Those awards mean little but this is what I mean about respect in the footballing world. It's just a sad reminder. We finished unbeaten with a thin squad in England and Henry didn't feature in the top 3, let alone losing out to Shevchenko.

He was outright unlucky the year he finished 2nd, but other than that if we won the UCL and Trezeguet didn't hit the bar in the WC Final Henry will be easily remembered as an all time great by the footballing world. Henry was always looked down because of our lack of achievements in Europe, compared to maybe Sheva for Milan

That said I feel fans in England give him much more respect than the rest of the world. Most people acknowledged him as the best player ever to grace the PL

He wasn't even the best player in his own team, let alone Italy or the world. One of the least deserved ballon d'ors ever. Not quite up there with the one Michael Owen got I suppose.

Klaus what are you going on about? Sheva was sensational and the ballon d'or is what his dazzling career deserves. Also, did he not win CL (and scoring winning penalty) in 2003?

He wasn't as good as Kaka that year. The Milan supporters didn't think so which is a pretty decent yardstick. Kaka arrived from Brazil and just took over. By Christmas he was their most important player and had relegated Rui Costa, Milan's most expensive signing ever, to the bench for good.

Shevchenko was a very good player at his best. He was never the best striker in the world, let alone the best player. Thierry Henry had more talent and ability in his weak foot.

An OMITT member kindly tipped their hat to Vermaelen in a recent discussion about Arsenal CBs. So I thought I'd reminisce about someone who seems like really decent guy and perhaps deserved a better career. I'm very grateful as a fan for his contribution to Arsenal.

I wanted to link to his goal in a (3-1?) loss to United, but couldn't find it.

It encapsulated what I absolutely adored about Vermaelen's input into an Arsenal team. He immersed himself into Arsenal's possession dominant scenarios during those times, and supplemented as an attacking outlet around the box. It seemed like an intriguing evolution in team shape in the final third against deep block opponents that I seldom see since.

The reason you don't see it since is that he was routinely caught out pressing at the wrong time(Ibrahimovic v Barca) and eventually the goals would die out as well. Nowadays the role played by the roving CB is taken up only in a back three or by full-backs or wingbacks cutting in.

Quite right. Doubled edged sword which eventually contributed to Vermaelen's dip with us.

Injuries seemed to be what really finished Vermaelen if I recall correctly?

His winner at home to Newcastle was my favourite Verminator moment. Especially as Krul had been time-wasting all game.
