In theory getting podolski closer to goal will result in a better return, but not having wingers higher up and focusing play more down the middle won't work. Everytime we were chasing a game last season and put an extra striker with robin we'd often look less threatening.

Yes, because that extra striker was Marouane Chamakh.

The system'll have to change. If we can't do possession play well then we shoud change the system to allow the other team to counter more (and thus, for us to counter more too). The defense and the midfield need to do a hell of a lot better defending though, but hopefully Bould can help with that.

We looked less threatening because Chamakh couldn't threaten a 4 year old girl.

We don't have the personnel to pull of a 4-4-2. The central midfielders are not good or dominant enough to cope with being out numbered and our wingers are too technically deficient and inconsistent to carry the creative burden.

Only Man Utd, Man City and mabe Tottenham have the players to pull off a 4-4-2 formation successfully.

Those teams switch to 4-5-1 plenty too. I wouldn't mind us having a bit more flexibility though. No reason why we should play the same formation in every game, it makes us too predictable for the smaller sides.

We should just do the natural thing and go 6-4-0. Our defence is stronger, and we don't have to worry about a striker ala Spain cos we'll have something even better than a false 9- no 9 at all.

Your first paragraph and parts of the second just don't stack up.

Makes sense to me, our midfield can barely control the game with three in there unless Arteta's playing. Unless Girioud and Podolski both hit the ground running (which is unlikely) I don't see how going 4-4-2 is going to help us.

Man Utd have the best and most natural wingers in the league. They bombard the opposition to submission through the wide areas which is something that we are not capable of doing.

Tottenham have Modric, Bale and VDV. Our wingers are not good enough for us to excute a 4-4-2 successfully and our central midfielders are not as dominant enough either.

We could pull it off if we still had Fabregas and Hleb. It would be a complete failure with our current personnel. Like Mirth said we can barely keep the ball, defend and control the game with three midfielders. Would be suicide if we switched to two in the middle.

Neither United's nor Tottenham's central midfielders are 'dominant'.

In Wilshere and Chamberlain we have the perfect wingers for a 4-4-2.

And if Lennon can play that formation, so can Walcott, although i would want him upfront in a system with 2 strikers.

We struggle to keep the ball when pressed but that is because of the slowness with which we move from defence to attack which really happens because we defend with 5 midfielders and leave just one man up top and that one man is no Drogba. The opposition has enough men back and organized by the time we can get to their third.

Moreover when teams leave two players up top the opposition themselves are cautious about attacking with more men, the full backs stay back as the two central defenders alone can't be relied with two strikers.

Can I just add that Tottenham played their best football when they went with one up top. Once they signed Saha and tried to play 4-4-2 (along with other factors) it went wrong for them.

If our wide players become a consistent threat and Podolski/Giroud become a lethal front pairing then it's worth considering. Otherwise the jury is still out.

Oh and Alex Song will need to learn how to hold his position.
