I called it few years ago about a situation similar to this. When a club stop winning trophies, nobody world class wants to join. Good players want to leave for more money and trophies. The cycle will go on continue until we chanced upon a side capable of winning trophies. Aka Dortmund.

The point is, RVP realised that he was not going to win trophies with this team/this club, so he decided to leave. Even our fans don't actually believe we'll win the league or CL.

I find adult fans who worship or 'overlike' players (if that makes sense) naive. They get their favourite player's name on the back of the shirt and constantly defend them as if they are the club themselves. These are the guys who feel the most hurt I guess. I don't understand why fans get so emotionally attached to the players, especially in this age where one club men rarely exist.

If you are a 12 year old kid that's one thing. If you're 22 by then you should realise that people move to prolong or change their careers. It's simple and characteristic of men.

And no one has answered Lagos's question. Why aren't people hurt when a crap player like Denilson moves?

All players come and go. He fed us over before we could f him over.

We've won sweet FA for several reasons but none of the players that came into the first team between 2005-2012 were particularly legendary. Maybe Cesc could have become one. It's not a big deal in itself. What is a big deal is that a top top player left because we're basically a poor team.

Arsenal need to take more risks and become more ruthless in getting the top players and then making them perform. So when they leave, we'll have something to show for our "loyalty" to them.

About the emotional attachment to players, I don't really get that. Most professional footballers earn ridiculous amounts of money at a very young age. This pretty much ensures that most of them become arrogant bastards. If I was set for life at seventeen I would have been probably even more unbearable myself. I have a lot of respect for Henry for example and greatly appreciate what he did for the club but I pretty much assume he is a dick.

By the way, my view is partly based on personal experience. The high school I went to is one of a few schools in belgium who provide a football education. (For example Steven Defour and Kevin De Bruyne went to my school.) By the time they graduated, after years of preferential treatment, almost all of them thought they were better than the average student.

They were better than the average student. I don't know how relevant your argument of 'players being dicks' is. Sure even Bergkamp was a nasty fucker on the pitch when he needed to be. I find it hard to believe players who have made it to the top level with such incredible competition aren't very confident in themselves and don't believe they're special. I think this has always been the case in any field.

The issue, for me, is about patience. 12 years ago, Wenger had the time to build a title-winning squad. He is the same man who built a squad of Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira, Pires, Ljungberg etc. Luckily for him at the time, those players didn't force a move and as we kept winning it became easier to retain them.

Since 2005, the 'patience' of players to stick around has lessened. Say what you want about players not leaving for money, money does play a part. It's not the only factor, but it is a factor. In recent years we've lost our star players exclusively to Man City, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid. They can all offer players more money than we can. Cashley and Vieira left at a point when we were still looking like a successful team. Imagine if Nasri and Fabregas had stayed until now - would we not have a squad that is capable of winning the title right now? That's what frustrates Wenger. Players aren't as patient as they used to be. And if anyone brings up a comment like '7 years without a trophy! how patient should they have to be?!' it's obvious that haven't understood my argument at all.

Of course. What are we even discussing here? Why do fans get emotionally-invested in players that are dicks? I don't know. No matter how footballers might behave behind closed doors (and for the likes of Theo, Jack, Sagna, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Per...well, nearly all players we have, we don't know what they're like), for 90 mins every week the players' goals are aligned with the fans. When you share that every week over a few years, naturally a connection develops.

Well, I actually don't disagree at all, I just meant that you shouldn't count on concepts like loyalty when talking about professional athletes, they almost get programmed to feel bigger then the club.

The thing is van Persie never seemed like a cunt, at least not at Arsenal. Everyone knew Cesc was a spoilt little prick, he acted like it all the time, that was no surprise. Most of us expected van Persie to leave but not many thought he'd fuck us over on the way out.

For some reason I don't think van Persie would react to what's being said in the media. I don't think what Wenger said changed anything.

More likely, something may have changed behind the scenes. An enquiry by City/Juve/Madrid? Or they felt Arsenal were going to go through with their threat of keeping him on for another year?

Going public was very poor on his part, granted...But I personally don't care...It it creates tensions for the likes of this triumvirate of A/G/K, then it is okay by me...

If players had stayed, i.e., Cesc and Nasri, I doubt very much if we would have won anything...It's pure speculation to suggest otherwise...

Just hope these knuckleheads spend the money on shoring up the defense and bringing in creative midfielders....By shoring up the defense I guess I mean Wenger and staff need to take a training course....Seriously....

..and that's all he said. The first statement barely even counts.

Sounds like a throw away soundbite more than anything.

van Persie's statement is much more thought out and deliberate. He's been planning it for a long time and covered all bases, maybe Wenger's statement helped give him an opening but that's about it. It certainly didn't rouse him into action or anything.

Seems unlikely given his statement has the smell of having been vetted by several people, probably agent and legal at a minimum. The theory that something has changed behind the scenes to prompt both statements seems more plausible.
