I disagree regarding winning percentage. If you win 2/3 of your games in general as opposed to 1/2 of your games I´d say that gives you a better chance of winning things.
As for why he resigned/got fired - I hope it was because he felt the FA was stepping into his domain. I agree with him in principle, that the manager selects the team and appoints the captain. That is NOT a matter for the FA IMO. I fear though that Capello wanted Terry as his captain, but I really hope that´s not the real issue.

His style was well known when they hired him. He hasn´t changed. Naive from the English FA if they thought he would change. I don´t think they did though.
If he quit on principle, then congrats to him btw for sticking to his guns.
Remind me of all those famous international managers throughout history remembered for their winning record in qualifiers and friendlies. Irrelevant I'm afraid. It'd be like lauding an Arsenal manager for getting the side past the first couple of rounds of the Carling Cup with regularity, or doing well in the Emirates Cup.
As for the rest of it, Capello should have dealt with Terry himself. His failure to do so is unimpressive. That rule about team selection being the manager's domain only applies when he's not embarrassing his country and failing to control the dressing room.
