Hopefully we're just trying to stuff Vertonghen around to hobble Spuds and Newcastle's dealings in the transfer market. Spuds would be jonesing for a player like that with King and Dawson dying out there on their crockety legs.

Big Jan would be an excellent signing Burnwinter. He's coming from a lower level so it's hard to say but he could probably pplay in defence or midfield and improve us.

I'm the first to admit I don't really "get" our defensive issues, apart from a lack of continuity and the injuries at LB. We're well stocked with central defenders, and in midfield we've got Song and options such as Arteta, Frimpong and Coquelin.

All that's why I don't really see the need for Vertonghen, but do like the idea of signing a good quality specialist left back.

What are the opinions on this Belhanda that Wenger has mentioned? Seems like another potentially slightly pointless signing at this distance.

We need a star first and foremost. Once we've signed a Goetze, then we can shake our pockets and purses to see if there is anything left for some of these other characters. Gervinhos should arrive on the last day of the window, not the first.

Frimpong is out for some time and Coquelin is too young.

One of the biggest issues with this team is that it is too quiet and somebody like Jan can go a long way in rectifying that personality flaw.

ive wanted vertonghen for a while now. he'd be a superb utility, and would spell the end of jd and squilaci. he's capable of winning a spot in our back four if he's on form

It's interesting you mention his personality, because there are somewhat mixed reports about how much of a strong leader, voice and organiser he is at Ajax.

However Vermaelen / Koscielny / Song is definitely a relatively quiet trio.

I do think we need a versatile defensive signing, my preferred choice would be an experienced fullback who can play on the left or right, adriano from barca would be perfect, otherwise someone like vertonghen who can play lb cb dm would be great to have in the squad.

The Tarrabt comparison is spot on from the little I've seen of him. Wouldn't want him here in a month of Sundays.

Vertonghen is a pretty big personality, really confident, bordering on arrogant on the pitch, but he's really not that good of a player at this point. He makes stupid, naive mistakes at the back, switches off and costs goals - I think he's still a couple of seasons of playing at the top level away from being a top class centreback. Unless he's made great strides in the last few months when I haven't been paying attention, but I doubt it.

Holtby looks a much better and more 'fit for purpose' player than Belhanda. Admittedly, I have seen Holtby more times but he just looks a better footballer; he's far better than Nasri was when we signed him and a country mile better than Rosicky for instance. Better than Ramsey as well in many ways.

I only have YouTube to go on, but Holtby looked like a very interesting player. Definitely looked a central player though.

I reckon Rosicky signing on kills our interest in any extra bodies for that position though, which is a shame.

Big thing is that he doesn't score enough and isn't Ozil level of playmaking to justify that; he's like Mata/Silva kind of level although he is much less experienced so who knows if he can lift it. As I said, his best season has indisputably been as a wideman.

I don't really see why Schalke would sell him to be honest but I also don't know enough about them to question it.

@Ricky surely our options are just as open as ever regarding Rosicky, though he has signed. We could let him go for a modest fee if he was looking for a payday 3-4 year contract in a more relaxing environment.

Tricky, fast and direct our new style of wingers he is better than what we have currently have but is are their better options out there.

Not this summer we won't. He's here for another year at least.

I think we've made two more poor decisions on contract extensions in Djourou and Rosicky. I hope I'm wrong, but I get the feeling neither will be of too much use next season. I think we could have invested those wages in better players.

Yeah, maybe I'm optimistic about the possibility of Rosicky's departure.

As far as Diaby's concerned I want to see how he comes up, but that's mostly sentimental I'll admit, don't have much hope for him.

Djourou is fine as a 4th choice CB, and I think it was a good decision to extend his contract. As I have said before though - if the figure of £50k per week is correct, I find it very difficult to belive we couldn´t have kept him for quite a bit less.

Personally I feel fine with our CB options now, especially if Squillaci is replaced by Miquel/Bartley. Because of what we have, I strongly question the rumors that we are after Vertonghen. I don´t particularly like him either, but that is beside the point.

As for Rosicky, I have made up my mind that I think it is better for everyone if he leaves in the summer. Since there reportedly is an offer on the table for him from the club, I hope he rejects it. He is too good not to play regularly, but not good enough to warrant a starting spot at Arsenal IMO. He has proved to be pretty crap as a bit part player as well.
IF the £50k per week for Djourou is true, I don´t even want to think about what we are offering Rosicky for an extension. Without us even strengthening the squad in midfield I cannot see Rosicky being involved in more than 10-15 games next season. There MUST be better ways to use that money.
