Even before Djourou got injured, he was weak sauce. Our issues largely stemmed from a lack of shape and discipline. George Graham used to say that where quality fails, routine (doing the basics correctly) will prevail. Strangely that's a philosophy that Wenger has believed in, but always done so halfheartedly with his total football and opted for individualism over rigidity. We need to work on having our players hold their ground and simply doing their jobs. Our midfield was unable to play with the discipline and rigidity it required in order to mix up play and instead attempted to over-rely on the wingers that just failed to get into the game effectively.
Proper fucking mentallist... 😉
Not sure how you can say that, we had Walcott and Gervinho protecting the flanks. Gervinho in particular ran his arse off yesterday. In midfield, Arteta was the epitome of discipline, did you see how much work he got through in protecting the defense?
I don't think saying we had a lack of shape is valid anywhere other than the fifteen minutes that followed their goal. And, whilst it was a little early for panic stations, you have to be fair and also say that we nearly had a couple of goals out of that period.
We could have also conceded a couple, but hey, City are the best team we'll face in the league this season. So I can forgive the boys that.
