Since neither Köln, Arsenal or Podolski has commited yet, I´d say that is up in the air.

Capi thinks Podolski is waiting to see if we can offer CL footy, I think Arsenal are still haggling over a transfer fee.

If Capi is right, and it is still a real possibility that we will end 4th, then he may not want to commit to us until after a possible CL qualifier. That means late August. Every possibilty that another big club could come in and hijack this deal.

If I am right, then there is a real possibility that we will fail to meet a fee that Köln is happy with. Podolski is a good player. I am sure there will be other offers for him that he will find acceptable.

This whole CL qualifier thing is a crock o'shit excuse used by fans to keep their hopes alive during the summer when we've yet again failed to do the business we need to. I don't really believe players see it as such a big obstacle - partly because the teams we play in it are always shite.

It's a differentiator should two clubs of similar standing be in for a player. It also goes a long way in negotiations.

Maybe. But I doubt it's much of a factor. I'm pretty sure I've never heard a player mention it in that context.

There's a bunch of stuff Podolski will need to weigh up before he makes his move, and I suspect a number of the factors he'll be considering will be more important than whether we are guaranteed CL football next season.

It makes a difference in club negotiations. I know it sounds stupid, but it's true; they negotiate like market traders.

Watching yesterday's press-conference, it sounded to me like this very close to being done. I've rarely seen Wenger talk so candidly about a transfer.

I don´t buy into the whole CL thing too much either. We have never been seriously interested in that top bracket of players where CL football would be essential.

As Wenger stated, it's all in the player's hands now. We've obviously placed all our cards on the table. If another club swoops in for him with a better offer for both player and Koln in the next couple of months, it might scupper our chances of signing him.

Sign him early if he doesnt want to sign or is hesitant then forget it, he isnt that special that we should stop all our potential attacking signings for him to make his mind up. We need someone who can help rvp in the goal stakes on a regular basis. Podolski is that but he isnt the only one out there.

Thing is, all other things never are equal, and I can't imagine there are many factors that this would actually trump in our case, and with our record. That's all.

Tend to agree, but unless there is a better player availalable that we can negotiate with right now, might as well leave it in Podolski's hands until there is.
