Cheers, Banduan. How did you get a start in it?

I don't have Comms degree. I don't even have a degree.

I was brought into a listed port operator to manage their annual report production and website dev, primarily because I knew Photoshop and web. I asked for half the salary that grads asked for, because I was thinking it was only temporary.

I realised that all the skills needed for Comms could be learnt on the job. I took a bit of time after work to polish up these skills. I got my salary readjusted and improved then reached a ceiling with the company and moved on.

I do realise I'm missing theoretical underpinnings, but the Comms grads I've worked with don't know how to match their studies with their work. Heck, most people don't really understand what a Comms job entails anyway. It certainly isn't marketing and sales.

Since you've worked in that side of the business though, I'd suggest you read up loads on branding and brand management. You need to be able to pit that knowledge against pesky bean-counters.

I'm back working for the state Planning Department helping make housing delivery easier. Before that I spent about 6 years working on developing a new suburb in Sydney's west which was fun. We won a commendation last year from the peak industry body - see the bottom of the article in the link. I really link making good places for people to live.

i know the place well. went to school in doonside, have alot of mates out that way.

As I understand it, IG is thinking of investing big in Nigeria from a letter he received. I have advised him to go in big.

Currently doing a law degree, plan on doing either a master of finance and capital markets, or a MBA afterwards. Then I hope to go into trading, FOREX spot trading specifically.

However, I'm realising that my CV is far from exceptional though. I'll have a degree from a good university (but not a top one), and I've only done one internship so far. So, I've been thinking about joining the French foreign legion for 5 years, according to a few of my contacts in the finance world military experience is highly valued, especially in trading. In your experience, how true is this? I'm kinda looking for something to stand out on my CV...
