Chelsea are paying Mata 55k a week. He was well within our price range. No excuses Wenger.

They're obviously not going to pay him £55K per week. He would end up earning less at one of the richest clubs in the world than he did at Valencia in that case when you factor in the higher taxes.

He was reportedly on 40k euros a week so thats a 20k euro a week increase. It makes sense and it's being reported in the spanish media. Luiz is on 40k and Ramires on 30k. Apparently Chelsea are trying to cut back on wages.

He's not on 55K a week, it's illogical to believe that he is. In that it makes no sense at all for a player of his standing, who cost as much as he did, to be on such a small amount.

It doesn't make sense at all. Where do you get these numbers from? They seem completely made up to me. Like they'd spend £25 million on reinforcing with Luiz in January only to then make him one of the lowest earners in the team.

Well, if all of the rumours surrounding our interest were to be believed (and I'm willing to take Mata senior at face value), the wage was low enough that we had it agreed only for us not to agree a fee with Valencia.

I reckon the wage was doable for us, for sure, less than 100K, but Chelsea have more pulling power right now, it's that simple.

I don't think we wanted him "at all costs" anyway.

Ultimately, I suspect it came down to the fact that Mata didn't want to come to join us and from his point of view, why the fuck would he over Chelsea? Perhaps it used to be a case of us not bidding enough and maybe now players just don't but into the allure?

Graham Hunter, who does genuinely know Mata and his father very well, was convinced that everything was agreed with the player and he was sold on Arsenal. The negotiations between the two clubs appear to have been the stumbling block.

How do you manage to stay upbeat and convinced that we will sign "real quality" Ricky?
I think we will probably sign Cahill or Jagielka, which would be a relief, but I honestly don't believe that any other signing will bring any great joy.

I want to believe we'll sign somebody like Hazard but I think the excuses for why we won't are already prepared.
I hope I'm so wrong about this.

If that's the case, you would have to assume Chelsea have paid more than the £23.5M that's being reported.
