Based on my incredibly limited understanding, the "release clause" isn't just a flat price, but has some structure to it i.e. "either amount X, or amount Y < X with Z add-ons, or amount P < Y with Z add-ons plus three pigs, a haircut and a letter of introduction to the Pope" sort of thing.

Sid Lowe now reckons that Spurs are the only team who have bid for Mata, but Arsenal have indicated they'll bid at a level acceptable to Valencia, whatever the fuck that means.

Knowing us, it probably means about £15.00 (made in three payments of £5.00) and a 10% discount for their next purchase at the club shop (for orders of £40.00 or more, naturally).

The trouble with the likes of Spurs piggy-backing our transfer strategy is that they need only bid above our lowball offers to have a chance of winning the day.

Fucking Redknapp takes advantage of us having set the tone of negotiations and then sweeps in for the kill with an extra 5-10%, or whatever it takes for the player to choose the inferior club.

Burnie, it's interesting that you mention your idea of Arry's "transfer strategy," because I read something by a so-called ITK that a lot of clubs don't even bother with in-depth scouting. Instead, they'll often leech off of players we're linked to, knowing the quality of our scouting system.

It absolutely makes sense - especially when in our case we rarely announce done deals because we drag negotiations on for a long time. With all of our significant transfers there's a window of opportunity for the likes of Spurs to hike up their skirts and show a bit of leg.

If I were in 'Arry's position I'd do the same thing - I don't think it's his entire strategy mind you, but it happens too often for it to be coincidence.

Apparently Valencia press reporting today he's staying.

I'm near Valencia right now, so will try to find out more...

Hard to say, they sold Joaquin to Malaga and Vincente was released, so they need players in that position regardless of what happens with Mata. I just don't get the feeling we're in for him, I think Nasri is going to stay.

I think Nasri is a better player but I'd rather replace him with Mata now than keep a player who's free to talk to clubs in January.

That's a ridiculous thing to say but their fans won't feel like they have gotten shafted when Mata moves for the usual 'undisclosed' fee.
