Come on Burnsy, he's up against it as it is with injury worries. Last thing he needs is you jinxing him!

I like Gibbs and think he'll be a good player, or would be barring the injury troubles that have held him back. But I think promoting him to first choice left back could be one of Wenger's biggest ever on field mistakes, certainly of recent years anyway.

Yep, I was talking about his injury worries Tam.

My thinking is that if he's injured half the next season we should scrap him. I don't think he should be first choice but it appears for now that he will be, unless Traore is preferred, which can't entirely be ruled out.

Sane thinking. Walcott is already injured anyway and Arshavin can't be relied upon in any way unless he's on a strong run. As for Gervinho I've got a feeling that he'll mainly be a central option, capable of playing out wide if he needs to. Nasri can fuck off next summer for all I care, but we need him at the moment far more than we need £20 million in the bank.

The question should simply be: even with Mata in, can we make Champs League without both Nasri and Fabregas?

Can't say I agree Klaus. If we could genuinely afford to throw away his potential fee, we could always offer Nasri a much improved contract for the next five years - yes, yes, the structure, but still. We could offer him an extra £50-100k / week - and we could probably keep a grip on the structure as well. We've had special cases in our wage system before.

I don't think we can afford it, but the figures stack up fairly well.

Rumours have it that we've offered him £115K per week now and he's turned it down. To me the wages are just starting to look like a convenient excuse on Nasri's part.

No one really knows what's going on with Nasri, though. About all we know with certainty is that he hasn't signed, and that he's had tacit offers from one or more clubs, with most interest seeming to come from United and City.

Any public statements that have been made are definitely tactical and can't be taken at face value, or interpreted as definitive with respect to his intentions, or ours.

That goes both ways then.

In any case I think hanging on to him for another year is important. You can't force players to sign but you can stop them from leaving at their convenience. We're at a stage where we need to stop thinking about what the best deal is and instead consider what would give us the best advantage next season.

The only problem with that is, Nasri has done nothing to deserve to be a special case.

That said, i agree with you on selling him and reinvesting the money in the squad.

Even if it may temporarily impact continuity and have an effect on our football (attack), as long as the money is re-invested to bring in top quality, we will get away with it over the course of the season.

We cannot afford to lose the £20 Mn on a player.

If that is how those in charge at Arsenal are thinking, and I very much suspect it is, it is soooo wrong. If Mata has been identified as a player who can add something to the squad we should buy him irrespective of whether Barcelona will meet our asking price on Cesc or not. Waiting to see what Barcelona will or won´t do is stupid.

Think a defender (or two) is more of a priority and have no problem with the bulk of whatever transfer money we have going on that area. Their thinking must be that Mata is just a luxury if Cesc stays and I would be inclined to agree if it weren't for the fact that Nasri is probably going to piss off within a year too.

I actually think having Mata while keeping Nasri, Fabregas and all our other AMs would be a waste of money given our problems in defense. I'm fine with the idea of replacing Fabregas with Mata. Any excess money should go towards defense.
