Up until this week I thought Bale would be a bit of a wimp about the prospect of moving to Madrid, seems a homey type, not up to living abroad yet.
Now I'm not sure, if there is any truth at all in those reports and he wants to go to Madrid then it's just a matter of Madrid paying the insane ransom that Spurs will demand.

The amount of money doesn't worry me. They'd struggle to get quality in and would have to up their wage bill significantly

why would someone with a career that has at most 15 years left in it want to play without a contract? you're better off securing a contract. you can always renegotiate it or demand a move to a better paying club. winding down contracts is not smart. it's for people with questionable desirability and who want to make themselves more attractive.

Well, if he'd known how well he'd play in 12-13 and how sought after he'd therefore be this window, the motivation not to be tied down would've been fairly clear - if he were available on a free transfer, he could've had a fair chunk of that £85m just on wages at Madrid.

Five year contract, £85m ~ £17m p.a. ~ £327k/w :o (or more, perhaps)

Anyway, Spurs will look better run than we are if they manage to get that much for him. Luck's a fortune ...

That summer we had two years ago still drives me nuts. We got in £70+ million from sales and the best player we bought was Arteta. Couple of good solid journeymen, a talented kid and a pile of shit.

We bid £1 in excess of £40 Million for a player. We were not daunted by the price set by Madrid. We didn't look for cheaper alternatives. We thought, might as well add £10 Million more and get a better player.

I would much rather Higuain myself but if i were to be objective that idiot is the better footballer. I don't want him here but let's not use anything and everything as a stick to beat Arsenal.
