I agree Tony. I mentioned that as something that bugged me about the current crop of women's players as well.
The number who totally lose it when they get to a final is quite high.

Find this a bizarre conversation, analyzing the body/conditioning of a top sports professional who just won Wimbledon....Is it because she is a woman, and the general public holds them to a different standard than men....The negativity towards her "maybe, maybe not weight issues" is embarrassing...She brought all her weapons to the match, played with confidence and defeated an ill prepared finalist....Had a tremendous match....And I thought it was refreshing for a change that two journey women were in the final.....Had the makings of a great final...Unfortunately, Lisicki's nerves got the better of her....
It's got nothing to do with the fact that she's a woman.
As Tim said if Murray or Djokovic showed up carrying a spare tyre there would be comment and the possibility that they would get destroyed.
I think it's patronising not to mention it.
Why should allowances be made for her?
Again good on her for winning but I don't think she did a whole lot for the game by doing so, unless people just like the storybook aspect of it all.
Generally I think that the women need to aim higher, raise the bar.
Serena is the only truly great player on the tour right now.
Well have to disagree, Yva....Her core strength seems to be in good condition, at 5'7" she is carrying about 135-140 lbs, most of which is muscle....She was fit enough to win the greatest tennis tournament in the world, with a spare tire! 😉 Maybe the powers will put an asterik next to her name, "won with a spare tire". 🙂 Who knows, maybe she needs to stretch out more...
As for story book ending, I found it to be more the case of an astute strategist/tactician, bringing her best game, her best mental game to the match...Bartoli's win may not have raised the profile of women's tennis for some, but for young, short girls (relatively speaking) she gives them something to strive for....
As for raising the bar of women's tennis, I thought that's what they did the past few years....The influx of very good Eastern Europeans and of course the Williams sisters (always wish that Serena will come into the net more often than she does, she is quick as lightening) But, unfortunately, it's turned into a power, base line game that most of the time is pretty boring....Although a one-sided match against a way too emotional Lisicki, at least Bartoli brought some fun into the game for a day.
