Off to Sheffield in a month for the second weekend of the World Snooker Championship. Feel a bit odd about Ronnie turning up to defend his title having not played for months, have a feeling he'll be gone by the time we arrive. Which would be a shame. Don't think this weekend will be anywhere near as good as the one we had last year; Jo and I saw the most decorated session of snooker ever played at the Crucible, Ronnie v Mark Williams and Stephen Hendry v the cheat, John Higgins. And Neil Robertson. And Judd Trump and Ali Carter and Ryan Day (who played like a demon in the session we saw).

What do you mean snooker's not a proper sport?

It's the purest form of sport, a gladiatorial contest, but with cues instead of tigers. A battle of nerves and will, there's nothing like it.

A real sport has to include some sort of physical input for me. Walking round a table and hitting a few balls with a cue doesn't quite qualify for me.

I do appreciate that others have different views on the matter though.

Didn't realise you were in Auckland mate. Was tempted to head up for the weekend but didn't in the end. Was glued to Cricinfo yesterday though and didn't get any work done. Left work at 4.15 and got home just aftert 5, did not expect the Broad and Prior partnership to still be going when I got home. Can't believe we got out of that and saved it.

Yeah i did actually plan on going in on Sunday but other things got in the way.

I left work and you were 7 down and got home just before Williamson started THAT over.

We got a bit lucky with the rain throughout the series so i think it would've been a bit rough if we managed to snatch it. I expected us to get raped and would have bitten your hand off for a draw before the tests started.

Always amazes me how when the number 11 who cannot hold a bat at all is in, the fast bowlers just don't bowl yorkers at him. If Boult bowled 2 or 3 straight ones like that to Panesar he'd have missed one and that would have been that.

Think it's just because there are very few quicks who can reliably bowl a sandshoe crusher without throwing in a few full tosses.

Doesn't even have to be a shoe crushing yorker actually. 3 straight ones in a row halfway up middle and off and someone like Panesar is not going to keep them all out. The first 2 balls of the last over were bowled short of a length, way outside off for Panesar to easily leave. If not yorkers, at least make the number 11 have to play a shot and out of 6 balls there's a pretty good chance he'll miss or edge one.

Armor

Was pumped for the UFC in Sweden last weekend as a really good Irish prospect made his debut and we've never had anyone good in the UFC before. Fair to say it went well, Conor McGregor knocked out Marcus Brimmage in 67 seconds (Brimmage was 3-0 in the UFC) and won KO of the night and got a shitload of attention afterwards.

He's great to watch, brilliant in interviews as he seems a little mental and he also has 100% belief he's going to the top so really looking forward to what he does in the future. Posted the fight underneath.

I know there's not many NBA fans on here, and truth be told I'm not much of one either, but the Denver Nuggets are a great watch these days.

My issue with the NBA is its more about being a star than a professional athlete. Its become a farce of a league that survives on its marketing and star power - not the quality of the game. If it was based off the latter you wouldn't see the best players flocking to Miami to play all together.

This is a hilarious, satirical article (link) on how stars get more attention for their 'dunk faces' than the players do for their dunks at the NBA All Star Game (a joke in itself). 😆

Back to the Nuggets though - they're one of a few teams that still is based and succeeding off team play. They're unbelievably unselfish, balanced and they play with a great desire to win.

Refreshing to see, and last night I had the privilege of watching them live when they beat the SA Spurs (who also are a true team) soundly.

i'm an nba fan, houston rockets. basketball is actually my favorite sport. i just do all my basketball discussion on clutchfans.net

and the heat succeed off team play, so do the spurs, thunder, pacers rockets, etc. just because the nuggets don't have an elite player doesn't mean they are more team oriented than the rest. the heat run one of the more sophisticated offenses out there. the first season of the big 3 the offense was individual focused with a bosh screen for lebron ... wash, rinse, repeat. then after the loss to the mavs they went back to the drawing board and created a whole new offense.

Used to be a big NBA fantast. One of the things I realized I didn't really have time for. Don't watch nearly enough these days. Too bad, since it really is a cracking sport and a great spectacle.

love the nba, been a big knicks guy since those mid 90s classics against the pacers. i'm hoping the knicks get out of the first round of the play-offs this year. i'll rarely go out of my way to watch regular season games unless the high seed/big market teams are playing e.g. ny, la, chi, miami, okc, boston.
