Qwiss it’s great to see both him and Julien Alfred beating heavily favoured Americans.
What’s interesting is both of them have been through NCAA programs, as is the case with many ther international sprinters. Facilities in the US are beyond comparison

Claudius facilities may be part of the initial draw, but it's the almost unconditional support for college sports, socially and politically, and the people that such an environment draws (coaches, staff, etc.) that really make the difference. As an academic, it's actually quite frustrating, because the real activities of a university are totally marginalized in comparison.

Claudius I wasn't surprised by Jillian Alfred. I saw her run in the Diamond League, in London I think, and she just looked supreme. And, like Tebogo yesterday, easy.

Was a bit gutted for Darryl in the 100 and then Dina in the 200 though - if it was the 195 metres etc....

When he won, I wondered, what do you call a person from Botswana? And I'm thinking, Botswanian doesn't sound right. The answer turns out to be interesting in that the modifiers are front-ended rather than back-ended:

Coombs I’m always blown away by how much money goes into sports versus academics. You can pay a head coach $5m but would never think to that into faculty pay and research funding. It’s all funded by tv of course, but it’s a strange imbalance

Claudius I'd pass up on the faculty salary and research funding if they'd just put a fraction of the money into the facilities we need to actually teach the curriculum. I've literally had a part of the classroom ceiling fall in and narrowly miss hitting undergraduates, while watching them build a brand new multi-million dollar scoreboard for Coach Prime right out the window.

To be fair I think they'd probably pay some academics more if they were able to report results such as "I supervised the PhDs of the three measurably most brilliant theoretical physics researchers in the history of science."

Meatwad actually I need to double check what he ended up doing. He received a scholarship to university of Oregon and was supposed to have started last two autumn back but I think he just decided to focus on his career. I’ll confirm what he’s done re: college

flobaba good to see South Africa with men’s 4x100 silver as well. There is enough evidence that with more investment these two countries can flood sub 800 distances.
