South Africa had a weird celebratory environment yesterday. I was in a mall for the game. All the pubs were full. But it still revealed the game’s split in support base, with most patrons at pubs being white . I went to some parties later. Folks celebrated the win. Was in a diverse group. Black guys were really happy that a black captain has lifted the cup. This was probably the first rugby World Cup since the 95 won that had had lots of black support. The significance was that Kholisi was probably the first black captain to lift a major World Cup title. Interesting point I would’ve missed. Otherwise the streets were not filled with people as I would’ve expected. I thought there’d be more of a carnival. But in Johannesburg at least the celebration was more contained. If South Africa won the football World Cup, for example, the city would shut down for a day or two, I expect. It would be absolute chaos.
