I think the worst teams were Sacramento (😆 why do you need to draft 2 centers when you have Cousins and Cauley Stein) and Boston (should've drafted Kris Dunn if they wanted Jimmy Butler so badly, questionable picks this draft).
yeah im a sixers fan. i was pretty invested in basketball growing up and they are my local team. the 2001 finals when iverson almost singlehandedly willed them to a title was pretty much the last sixers team i cared about. as they coasted into mediocrity for a decade, i lost interest because i can only follow so many sports, and they seemed to be stuck in an endless loop of shit. when they hired sam hinkie, i got back involved, especially in the last 18 months or so. when he resigned, i was furious. thankfully they didnt fuck things up last night.
simmons is obviously going to function as the point guard in the half court and in transition, and he is going to defend the 4 on defense. hes fast enough to switch out and guard anyone if needed, so that is good. everyone is talking how his jump shot is broken, but i think thats bullshit. his form looks fine. i think its overblown because he was so physically dominant and could score at will inside that there was no need for him to shoot outside shots.
im a big fan of luwawu and korkmaz. id guess that luwawu will come over this summer, korkmaz will be a draft and stash. the big issue obviously is that the team has too many centers. jojo is a huge question mark because he hasnt played in 2 years, but he has the most upside of anyone on the team, including simmons. that leaves them with nerlens and oakafor too. the okafor draft pick was the biggest mistake hinkie made. i get that oakafor was ranked #2 on everyone's board and they felt they should just take the best player and try to work it out, but it obviously hasnt worked out. hes a relic from the old nba because he cant fucking defend anyone and hes not athletic. nerlens is much more the prototypical new nba center, because hes much more athletic and is an elite rim protector. that said, he can only score from 5 feet and closer, but given how they will approach the rest of the roster, nerlens doesnt need to score 20 points a game to make a big impact.
then of course, nerlens is an RFA next summer and will get a huge deal. oakafor has 3 more cheap years left. i think im secretly hoping we can somehow fleece the kings out of more assets if they decide to trade boogie this summer, and after his hilarious tweet last night, i have a feeling he is begging to get out of there now.
the sixers have the most cap space in the nba this summer, but they're going to struggle to even get to the salary floor because they wont be able to sign an elite player.
they need to move oakafor for whatever they can get. that at least clears up some of the log jam. you figure that jojo will only get 15-20 minutes per game at most at least for a few months. if he looks like hes going to stay healthy, then you can flip nerlens for a big offer at the trade deadline. the sixers need shooters and wingers, obviously. their guard situation on the roster is fucking hideous. right now, the depth chart is basically
C: nerlens > okafor > jojo
PF: simmons > saric (if he comes over) > covington
SF: ?? > ??
SG: ?? > luwawu
PG: ?? > ??
they have a bunch of interesting guys, but most of them are power forwards, which obviously stinks since they've got a glut there already. the team was so bad last year, but it was obviously by design. the key is going to now be how to consolidate the front court assets and add players at the 1-3. they dont need to overpay for a dynamic do everything 1 guard because simmons is going to basically fill that role offensively.
