Came across Sumo wrestling by chance, but became completely captivated by The Wolf, Chiyonofuji. He was a very atypical sumo wrestler too due to 'only' weighing in at about 120 kg.

Defo a sport! 🙂

I love these kind of "what isn't a sport" discussions. I had a great one during the olympics with a co-worker who has her PhD in sports history. I developed a somewhat dubious set of criteria and used it to eliminate a whole bunch of olympic events...mostly just to wind her up! Worked a treat because the first casualty was swimming which just happened to be her favourite. For the record, pool and snooker would fail my test, but sumo would be in (though somewhat reluctantly).

RTC, I have tried to watch snooker! I can honestly say that I would rather watch paint dry.

Okay, but the fact that you feel like that doesn't make it any less worthy. There are few sporting sights as thrilling as the Rocket in full flow. Not that everyone plays like he does.

Something like that. From memory the two main criteria were that it had to involve relatively strenuous physical activity and there had to be some kind of dynamic interaction between opponents whereby one persona/teams performance directly effected the others. This meant that I was able to eliminate events that are more artistic/creative and game like, as well as various types of 'races' where there is little or no dynamic interaction. Swimming was the main case in point because they use technology in pools to specifically reduce the effects of swimming in a pool with other swimmers. It was actually a story on the pools at the Olympics that started the discussion.

Really? I find it extremely ridiculous that in this day and age hockey still condones fighting the way they do. How can it be 'part of the game' to just decide to drop your gloves and go after another guy? I think it is pathetic.
