He'd be an utterly pointless buy otherwise. Bloke's coming in to start until Saliba is back - and the fact that we've spent £50 million on him suggests that we're not too sure when that's gonna be. This is title insurance. We can now afford to treat every minute we get from Saliba as a bonus.

I think there are two plausible explanations for why we prioritized CBs over FBs. First, we expect Saliba to be unavailable for several months (whereas we expect Timber back in a few weeks). Second, this is just Arteta's preference; every single one of our defenders was originally a CB and some of them now play FB as well. The second one is definitely true, the first one probably is as well.
Haven't really watched Konsa that much, but my very superficial impression is that he is an average defender. A desperate short term solution.
Defender compilations are a fool's errand IMO. You could find enough clips to put together a 3-4 minute Saliba fails compilation from the last 2-3 seasons and that doesn't mean he's anything but world class. Konsa's stats back up the fact that he's a very good PL CB with loads of experience and existing relationships with a lot of our current first team players. I certainly trust him more to fill in for Saliba than I would Mosquera and also think that if Gabriel was to get injured, he could help with his ability to play LCB in a pinch too. It's not a sexy signing but we were literally one Mosquera or White injury away from needing to play either a LB as RB or Rice/Zubimendi as RB and eliminating that point of failure is just as important as bringing in a new attacker IMO.

I've never seen Saliba play long passes like that. Gabriel does from time to time but Saliba keeps it quite simple.
Konsa always looks so positionally incompetent for England, and a bit suspect on the ball. Don't really watch him in his proper team. Decent backup, hope he's better than I think.
Coombs he’s very good on the ball. As is Romero who we were heavily linked too.
The evolution Mikel speak of is one of better technical ability.
So far all our additions have been great
At the very least now we will maintain last season.
Saliba, White, Rice were all injury worries now covered by Konsa and Bruno
Ode and Saka are the other two that need cover.
If we want to go to the next level we need a real quality attacker.
Ray Eze is Ode cover.
