Oh, I'd forgotten that. In which case, £60m does seem a bit disappointing when you see what Savinho is going for but yeah...wages.

Was listening to the Handbrake Off podcast and it was interesting to hear Adrian Clarke suggest that Martinelli probably knew about the desire to sell him but was dragging his heels on finding a new club (ie. someone to match his wages). It's interesting because in all the reporting and interviews of Martinelli, he's seemed not that fussed (relatively speaking) about his wages and just wanted to continue playing for Arsenal. Wonder if his management are the problem and Berta is now playing hardball to force their hand?

All a very strange situation.

I'm sure he'd have better options if the fee was lower but that wouldn't be ideal for us

We're getting something that is ideal for us - we're getting the best deal we can get

rest once he's out of arsenal it doesn't really matter where his career goes

We should care what he's going for. Gazza is probably right that were going for Alvarez or Barcola. It makes a difference to how much we can pay for them

Would be funny if his position he doesn't want to go to Turkey because wants to play for a top European side but goes to Saudi. Obviously more money but then the top European thing less important..

As for options his wage is likely too much for most clubs which means that want to pay less and he has attributes but your not getting many goals from him so in terms of wingers that puts him quite down the list I reckon.

If Martinelli is going I'm not sure what I want us to do next. I don't really like any of the options for the prices being talked about. Alvarez and Barcola are good players, at they really such massive game changers that they are worth £140/150m? I don't think so. If we leg Marti go and sign Alvarez isn't that very unbalanced? It feels like the club are acting a little desperately now after missing Vini and Rogers.

I'm guessing that the club have something in mind or are actively working on something that could be closer than we think if we're quickly trying to sell Marti... Would i mind if its Barcola? No, but he's crazy expensive.. Do i want Alvarez? Eh, not particularly, but if its him, i will reserve judgement. Same goes for anyone else that it might be.

Here's where the "not my money" issue comes into play. Opportunity cost is the reason it matters - overspending on X reduces your ability to get Y in the future. So the question say with Barcola (or Alvarez) is not so much whether he's "worth" £120M+ (or whatever) but whether we think there's a better player (or pair of players) who will be available for similar money in the next 12 months.

Personally I think Barcola is a better fit for us than Alvarez if we're selling Martinelli - we'll need someone with that kind of speed.
But what I really think - responding to my own question above - is that Kroupi for £80M is better business than either of the above for £120M plus. But he's less proven, and currently injured.

Claudius this is the other issue. If we sign Barcola for huge money and he flops that's a massive blocker to other potential signings.

@RowJimmy QuincyAbeyie we don't have a static pool of funds, or even a fixed income. The only real argument against so-called overspending is how much profit the owners can pocket.

and both UEFA and the PL have rules in place to keep you in check if you want to be wasteful net spenders.
