who says arteta can't talk to them? i'm sure he learned all about mosquera after berta told him that's who he wants to sign for backup CB. and read the research on his family and everything because he knew about mosquera's brother when they showed up for the presentation. but it wasn't arteta scouting mosquera and saying yeah i want that guy. that shouldn't be a part of his remit. if he knows about all these players before hand then he isn't doing his job during the season. the players he will have direct knowledge of show up on opponent film and on the field and that's very limited.

This is where the title challenge is falling apart. We have squad depth everywhere except in midfield. Merino was our best central midfielder off the bench and Norgaard is a use in emergency only type of option.

the attack isn't worse than i thought. i don't really rate any of them. the defense is worse than i thought though. i've always suspected that they are little overrated because of how we systematically protect them (usually) and wilo and big gabi always having a clanger ready in the chamber, but not this bad.

Meatwad agree I thought the grind might hold up but the defence has totally dropped the past few months.

Claudius two fullbacks who were largely first choice last year and who are two full internationals. Players who have been key players in a strong defence in recent times.

They aren’t kids or newcomers.

It’s no excuse.

Claudius Myles did well enough. White was appalling which is becoming a worrying pattern. Mosquera looked a big upgrade.

I thought Havertz was just terrible throughout. The duel monster is gone and he's looking like his worst Chelsea days.

Madueke was terrible again too. There's too little upside with him. I think it's time to admit he was a mistake.

Ultimately though we had no creativity until Eze came on. He looked assured but couldn't quite drag the team through.

We can still win it but we need our players back. This line up looked poor from the start.

awooga83 yeah, you know what, even I'm not daft enough to argue that after a game like today's. My one hope is City still have a lot of work to do to get to us - and they're running out of games. Arteta's got a huge week ahead now.

He’s great. Works with what he’s given and turns it into a very efficient, impressive and dangerous team for a club of their size and stature.

On the flip side, Arteta needs all his key players, the stars in perfect alignment, and the wind blowing at exactly the right speed and in the right direction for his system to produce.
